Chapter 358

Damien’s POV

The whispers followed me again, this time commenting on my sudden shift. When I came into the office this morning, I had been smiling wide and whistling. Not more than an hour later, I stalked out of my office with a grimace, determined and stern, a man on a mission.

I was on a quest for the truth, and Claire held the answers I wanted. I didn’t expect an easy fight with her, but I was willing to soldier on nonetheless. Regardless of the murmuring that followed in my wake.

People could think whatever they wanted. Rumors didn’t bother me anymore.

When I reached the area of the building where the Council offices were held, I could hear phones ringing down the hallway. Were they alerting each other about my presence? Or was it strictly coincidence?

When I entered Claire’s office without knocking, she leaned back in her chair, looking up like she wasn’t surprised to see me. I supposed I had my answer then.

“Alpha Damien, what a surprise,” she said in a way that made it seem like it wasn’t a surprise at all. “I heard rumors that you were in a good mood this morning, but they seem to have greatly exaggerated.”

“I was in a good mood,” I admitted. “But then I received a phone call, and heard some curious evidence that is to be today presented in Sienna’s case.”

Claire continued smiling, seemingly unaffected. But I knew her well, as I had for years, so I noticed when the corner of her eye started to twitch.

“She had a conspirator helping her with arranging her plans,” I said.

“Hmm, I don’t know what that has to do with me.”

“I think we both know why it would,” I said.

She hummed again, noncommittal. “While we are talking about rumors, maybe I should share the one I heard about you, that would explain your good mood.”

“Don’t change the subject,” I said.

“I heard Amelia’s back,” Claire said.

I froze for a half-second too long – long enough for her twitching to stop and her smile to take on a dangerous edge.

“Where did you hear that?” I asked, when my thoughts and senses returned to me.

“I have friends who are nurses at the hospital,” Claire replied. “They even said Alpha Jake was in town. How curious.”

“Drop it, Claire,” I said.

“Why should I?”

She likely wanted to negotiate, but I wasn’t going to let her. Eventually, I would reveal Amelia’s return on my

own. If it leaked early, my family and I could weather that storm.

On the other hand, if Claire was involved with Amelia’s attempted murder, that was not something that should be forgiven. The first time, my back had been to the wall. This time, I wasn’t going to let her get away with it.

“You want to know what I think?” I asked. “I think you conspired with Sienna to get rid of Amelia – again. And if patterns persist, then I bet you called Ethan to try to help you. Did you drag your brother in to do your dirty work? Was he the one who allowed Amelia to escape in the forest?”

“That’s cute that you think that,” she said. “Ethan doesn’t talk to me anymore. He blames me for all of his misfortunes -”

“As he should. Because it was your fault.”

She lifted her chin slightly in defiance. “Why don’t we call him then? If he hasn’t blocked my number, he can surely tell you himself that neither of us had anything to do with this.”

Ethan had been my trusted Beta once, but his affections and loyalty for his sister caused him to betray me. I wasn’t happy to speak to him again. He was rogue, and I would prefer if he stayed that way.

But I couldn’t really give any good complaints for having her call. Did I believe he would lie for her? Yes. Did I believe this was mostly pointless? Probably.

I blamed my curiosity for holding my tongue.

Ethan was supposed to be protecting my sister, and I did wonder about her. Maybe Ethan could reveal if she was well. As Alpha, I wasn’t supposed to care about those who had been exiled, but I still wished well for my sister, even if I didn’t want her in my pack or anywhere near Amelia.

“I’m calling him,” Claire said, and picked up the phone. She dialed the number from memory, which I found curious. How often did she call Ethan, especially if he never talked to her anymore? Or was it just that she had called him a few times recently, so the number was fresh in her mind.

Like if she had called him to organize an attack on Amalia in the forest of Jake’s pack.

The call rang for a moment. Then the phone picked up.

“I told you I didn’t want to talk to you,” Ethan said. “Stop calling me.

“Please tell Alpha Damien that I had nothing to do with Sienna’s little plot to murder Amelia,” Claire said.

“Alpha…” Ethan said, allowing the title to hang between us.

“I’m here, Ethan,” I said. “And I want answers.”

Ethan goes quiet for a few breaths. Then he spoke, “I haven’t spoken to Claire in a long time.”

That was clearly a lie, and not just because Claire remembered his number. He also just say that he told her he didn’t want to talk to her.

He continued, “I had nothing to do with that attack, and as far as I know Claire didn’t either.”

I was disappointed, but I didn’t know why I had allowed that for myself. I knew before she even called that he would defend her, even if they were estranged. Claire was still Ethan’s little sister and always would be.

He’d already shown that his loyalty to his family was stronger than his loyalty to his pack.

“Fine,” I said, hoping to end this conversation. I didn’t think he was going to reveal the truth to me at all, and I preferred to just stop things here. “That’s all we needed.”

“Oh? I would have thought you would want to know about your niece and nephews?” Ethan asked, even more hostility rising in my voice now.
