Chapter 383
Amelia’s POV
Later, after the girls returned to school, and Damien to work, I went to the hospital to check on the poisoned child. I didn’t want to cause a scene, I just wanted to make sure the kid was okay and help out however I could.
Immediately upon seeing me, the boy’s mother rushed to me and hugged me. “Thank you so much,” she said. ” You saved my son’s life.”
I tried to deny it, even shaking my head, yet before I could say a word, she was insisting.
“You did. You really did.”
“You did,” added one of the nearby nurses. “Everyone knows it. The way you jumped into action. The way you knew just what to do.”
“How did you know, Luna?” the mother asked me. “Your reflexes were so sharp. I could have sworn that you knew what was happening before anyone else.”
I wished I could give her a good answer, but the truth was, I wasn’t entirely sure myself. Yes, I had some medical experience, but never anything like that. Yet, I had been so confident. It was as if my hands already knew what to
“I don’t think it’s all that surprising,” the nurse said. “After all, Amelia apprenticed under Healer Eve while she was staying in Jake’s pack.” To me, she said, “You are being modest, but you don’t have to be. You did good work, Luna.”
The news all came as a shock to me for many reasons. I had met Healer Eve when I woke up with my memory loss, and she hadn’t mentioned anything to me about us even having met before, let alone that I was her apprentice.
I also had no idea that I was an apprentice at all. I had thought that when I came into the werewolf realm, that I had given up my dreams of being a doctor. After all, there wasn’t much that I had learned in the human realm that would crossover into the werewolf one.
When had I changed my mind about that?
Another question, perhaps more pressing, was… why was I staying at Jake’s pack? Was it an extended vacation? But would any vacation be long enough for me to apprentice a Healer?
Were the kids with me? Where was Damien, and why weren’t we together?
I had many questions, and no idea where to direct them. Before I could ask the nurse more questions, she was called away. Everyone was always busy at the hospital.
The mother wouldn’t know, so asking her anything wouldn’t benefit me.
She smiled, thanked me again, and then excused herself to return to her son.
I watched them for a while, pleased that the boy was doing well, even as I felt like my own world was slightly off -kilter.

That couldn’t be, though. I was certain there had to be a logical explanation for what had happened. If I asked Damien, I was certain he would tell me and it would make sense.
I trusted Damien so much. If something had happened between us, he would have told me by now.
This had to be something else.
Jake’s POV
I had a meeting with the lawyers in my office in ten minutes, so I was on my way up the elevator. I’d pushed for this meeting, wanting Claire to face judgement as soon as possible. The sooner she was permanently behind bars, the happier I would be.
After everything she had done to Amelia and my family, and to that poor little boy, she didn’t deserve to be free.
The elevator doors opened and I stepped out into the hallway. Immediately, I noticed a commotion over by my Beta’s desk outside of my office.
The lawyers were already inside. I could see that from here.
But there was a lone man shouting at my Beta, “I demand to see the Alpha at once!”
I knew that voice, and not for the first time, I regretted inviting this man – Ian – into our lives.
As much as I wanted to avoid this conversation, I couldn’t. Not without entirely evading this whole hallway, turning around and leaving. But then I would miss the meeting with my lawyers.
Claire was going to face justice as soon as possible. I didn’t care what had to happen.
So I walked down the hall, bracing myself for a conflict with Ian.
My Beta turned and spotted me first, which was enough of a clue for Ian for him to turn around and see me as well. No sooner did his eyes land on me, than he was surging forward, fury on his face.
“Alpha, with all respect, you have a great deal of nerve respecting me and my family as you have,” he said.
That didn’t sound very respectful at all.
I tried to walk around him, but he stepped into my path, stopping me. I moved around him to go a different way, but he stepped into that path too.
Quickly, I realized either I was going to have to put up with this conversation or cast Ian out of my way by force. As frustrating as he could be, his family did hold influence in the pack and that made him worthy of at least a few minute of my time.
Even if I’d rather spend those moments punching him in the nose.
“I was not invited to the celebration banquet,” Ian said. “That is an offensive slight to me and my household.”
“You’ll want to direct your complaints to Damien’s pack,” I said.
“I’d rather ask your sister,” he said pointedly. “When were any of you going to tell me that my Annette is actually Amelia.”

Never.
“She had no memories of her previous life,” I said. “For a time, she was Annette.”
“She already had a mate, and you knew that.”
“She didn’t remember him.”
“The bond remained,” Ian said.
I wished I could have told this guy off, but the fact of the matter was, he was telling the truth. The bond did still remain, and it had even when Amelia had been Annette. It was the very unfortunate reason why Annette couldn’t connect with any of the men I placed in front of her.
Her heart, unfortunately, still belonged to Damien.
