Jake’s POV

Ian looked like he wanted to argue, but I exuded Alpha menace from my pores, telling him everything he needed to know about how I would receive any further arguments.

Smartly, though he was clearly still irritable, he moved to step around me. “This isn’t over,” he said as he stepped past. He didn’t slow as he moved down the hallway. I didn’t care to counter him.

A narcissist like him would always try to have the last word, and honestly, I didn’t have the time for those kinds of pointless games, not Claire’s judgement looming.

With lan gone, I walked into my office where the pack lawyers were already waiting.

“Should we know what that’s about?” asked one.

I shook my head. “Ian has felt slighted by me for some time. It’s nothing new to worry about. What we are here for, what I want to talk about, is Claire and how we are going to put her behind bars for the rest of her life.”

The head lawyer nodded. “I’m not convinced it will be that easy, Alpha. Whatever evidence we have, and whatever she has actually done, Claire is still a member of Damien’s pack council. That complicates matters.”

“Damien is on board with the punishment,” I said. “We have his full support.”

“Even so, his people might not agree,” continued the head lawyer. “We are sure to run into some political pushback.”

“Does the new alliance between our two packs mean nothing? Surely we can use that to help push this forward,” I said.

“It might be unwise to put so much pressure on such a new alliance,” said one of the other lawyers.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. Everyone in this room knew the full extent of what Claire had done and what she had already gotten away with.

“What are you suggesting then?” I asked them. “That we simply allow Claire to go free?”

“We aren’t saying that,” the head lawyer said. “But we need to be careful with how we move forward. We can’t be bullish.”

“We can be whatever we need to be,” I said, my frustration rising right alongside my anger. While I valued the input of my pack lawyers, I was still the Alpha. “Claire will be facing judgement, if I have to stand outside the jail and declare her condemnation myself.”

Amelia’s POV

That night, as Damien and I held each other in the dark of our bedroom, Damien whispered to me.

“I’m sorry that your first event as returning Luna ended so badly,” Damien said. “If you wanted to take a break from everything…”

“No,” I said fiercely. Taking a break was the last thing I wanted to do. Yes, the evening ended in near tragedy, but until that moment the event had been going well. And, as Claire had been the culprit and had been caught,

“I’m not pleased by what happened of course, but I refuse to hide. Trying to get me to run must have been exactly what Claire wanted me to do, if she truly hoped to be Luna. If I back down, she wins, even from within the prison,” I said. “No, I can’t allow that.”

Damien leaned in and kissed my temple with affection.

“The last event was just the start,” I said. My determination was solid and unbreakable. “From now on, I want to be even more active. I want to help with all events in the future.”

Damien rolled me in his arms, so that my back was flat on the bed and he was leaning over me, watching my face.

“You are an excellent Luna,” he said with such pride in his eyes that it made me blush. “You are my Luna, so of course you would be perfect.”

I tried to cover my face with my hand to hide my blush, but he batted my hand away. He smiled as he watched me, apparently enjoying this teasing very much.

His face went serious then, however, as he said, “I will be here for you every step of the way, Amelia. No matter what we face, we will do so together.”

“Damien…” His words left me breathless, so filled with love.
