Chapter 413
Claire and Sienna needed to be captured both for the danger they still caused as well as to properly face punishment for all that they had already done.
The thought that there were those out there aiding in their escape made my skin crawl. Who could have watched Sienna’s trial or Claire’s and thought that they deserved freedom?
I’d been fair to kind to Claire especially. Perhaps in being so lax in my judgments, I had made things worse for my pack. I had built a mistrust of the judgment system that allowed people to question if anyone was ever truly guilty, and even if they were, what kind of punishments should those from good households really suffer?
It was unnerving, this shift in the air.
The sooner we could capture Claire and Sienna and set everything straight, the better it would be for the good of the pack.
I was also keenly aware of the deadline I was under here. Protecting Amelia and the girls was my first priority, but with the Alpha King making his conditions clear, I knew, without capturing the fugitives, I risked losing control of my own pack.
All of these things combined meant for a perfect hurricane of stress and worry inside of myself. Even if I could convince myself to slow down, I didn’t think I’d be able to actually rest. There were too many terrible fears lingering on the horizon for me to be able to properly relax.
Midmorning, I stopped in my hunt along the border. It was time for one of the regular meetings I held with Jake and his enforcers. We both shifted as we spotted each other. We were cordial, but each standing firm in our own pack lands, facing each other.
Jake had his arms crossed. My hands were fists at my side. Both of us were incredibly tense, each carrying the weight of this escape.
“Nothing yet,” Jake said with clear annoyance. “Not even a hint. I have the most obvious places staked wherever they are, they are laying low at the moment.”
out,
but
“Not a trace here, either,” I said. I was hoping they hadn’t crossed the border yet, but there was no real telling if they had or not. Either way, I felt like a failure.
Jake hummed, discontented. “How is Amelia holding up? She must be on pins and needles.”
I swallowed hard. “I don’t know.”
Jake blinked. “What? How can you not know?”
“We’ve been searching,” I said. “I haven’t been home.”
Jake cursed and ran a hand through his hair. “You really are a fool, you know that?”
My enforcers started to growl at the insult, which in turn made Jake’s enforcers growl too.
Both Jake and I held up our hands to stop this from escalating. The enforcers backed off, but the tension was still high.

Jake sighed. “It’s like you haven’t learned anything, Damien. I can’t believe I keep entrusting my sister to you.
“We’re fine,” I said.
“Are you? If you haven’t seen her, how would you know?” Jake asked, “Seriously, Damien. You need to prioritize my sister and her feelings. If you don’t, you will lose her again.”
I frowned at him, wanting to fight and reject that notion. Amella was my mate and always would be, no matter
what.
But… with everything that had happened in the past, I knew she was also a stubborn, spirited woman who didn’t like to be confined or ignored.
I was trying to protect her now, but I had been trying to protect her then too. And in the past, it had exploded spectacularly in my face.
“I can take care of my own relationships,” I told him, hinting that he should back off.
He shook his head at me. “The meeting’s over.”
