Chapter 444
Damien’s POV
The largest known rogue lands were to the east of both of our packs.
“We should send as many guards as we can to that border,” Jake said.
I glanced around at the large amount of guards who were already patrolling the border between our two packs. To relegate some of them to the eastern border left more holes for Claire and Sienna to slip through.
“If we send too many guards there, who will be left to stop Claire and Slenna?” I asked.
Jake’s face hardened. I could see now, looking at him, that he was already willing to give up on this hunt. My anger sparked.
“They might have already slipped through, Damien. We could be wasting our time here,” Jake said.
“I’m not going to stop the hunt,” I said. “Protecting Amelia remains my top priority.”
Jake scoffed at me. “Amelia is important, but this is war. As Alphas, we have an obligation to our people.”
“It could be war. We have no proof of that other than some unsubstantiated claims from old documents.” I gave the folder back to him.
He tore it from my hands.
“What we know for fact is that Claire and Sienna have a track record for trying to kill Amelia,” I said. “Likely, they haven’t given up that fight. I’m more worried about that than some perceived war you have no proof of.”
Jake shook his head, but he didn’t say a single word more. Instead, he simply turned and walked away.
I wasn’t entirely unconcerned about the warning Jake was leaving me with. A rogue war was always a looming threat, and I could see how he would piece the clues together in that way.
But there were so many other things to worry about, I was starting to feel like I was stretched so thin, I was
translucent.
With Alpha King Benedict’s visit only a few days away, I was feeling the strain.
Above all, my confidence was failing as well. If Jake was ready to give up the hunt, then maybe it was hopeless. Maybe Claire and Sienna really had slipped through our fingers. They could have escaped to rogue territory, or Gods, what if they were already in my pack lands?
In which case, protecting the border between Jake and my packs was useless.
Maybe he was right, even if I didn’t want to admit it. But that meant, in addition to protecting the eastern border, I needed more guards to protect Amelia as well.
Whatever else Jake wanted to believe, I was still convinced that Amelia was a target. I wasn’t going to leave her unprotected. In fact, I was going to do more to keep her safe.
I hoped she could forgive me, but the first thing I did, when stepping away from the meeting point, was call my guards, sending many to the eastern border, but just as many to guard my house.

I wouldn’t lose Amelia. No matter what.
For the next I wasn’t sure how long, I didn’t go home. If I wanted my guards to put in the extra hours, then I had to be among them.
At least, that was what I was telling myself. While it was true, I had another reason for avoiding my estate.
I didn’t want to fight with Amelia.
I had promised to escort her outside of the house as part of our compromise, but now that I was more fully aware of the potential dangers around here, I couldn’t fulfill this promise. If I didn’t go home, then I wouldn’t have to break our agreement.
I was just avoiding it instead.
Amelia still called me regularly, though our conversations were becoming shorter and more curt.
Now, when I answered, I skipped the pleasantries, and started with, “I’m sorry, Amelia. I’m really busy right now.”
“You are always busy,” she replied. “You need to come home.”
“I will as soon as I’m able.”
“When will that be?”
“When I’m able,” I reiterated.
“Damien.”
I could feel just from the weight she added to my name that this was going to turn into a full-blown argument. So I quickly said, “I have to go,” and hung up as she was trying to say my name again.
I hated avoiding her like this. I wanted nothing more than to tell her I love her, to reassure her, and to be reassured by her. But it was just… easier this way. For both of us.
Claire’s POV
Regina welcomed us into her massive home with warmth. To my surprise, she even decided to host a bit of an event just for us. It was somewhat embarrassing walking into the room wearing servants’ clothes and a face that wasn’t mine, but those faithful to me that had gathered seemed delighted by it, more than scornful.
“You will definitely slip past the guards looking like this,” one said, smiling. I recognized him from the council. I was pleased to see that there were so many people loyal to me and the cause.
Damien truly hadn’t inspired much faith in his own people lately, likely because he kept choosing Amelia over his own pack time and time again. Now that there were children, it was even worse. People were tired of it. They were ready for a change.
Though, to be fair, most of these people had never liked Amelia anyway, even after learning she was actually a werewolf and not a human. They had been backing me to be Luna from Day 1.
Damien was the only one who couldn’t see my value. Whatever he saw in that brat Amelia was misguided. I should have been the true and best choice.

Amelia was still alive. All we had succeeded in doing was crossing the border. The hardest part was still ahead of
Sienna seemed uncomfortable with the crowd, but no one was as off-put as Ruth, who openly scowled at anyone who came too close to her. When I dared, I heard her muttering.
