Chapter 453
Amelia’s POV
I saw Damien walking off to greet the guests. More and more were arriving all the time. Before the place became too crowded, there was something that I had been meaning to do.
Something I had wanted to so for weeks now, since we had started planning this event.
Excusing myself from my parents, leaving the kids in their care, I walked straight across the ballroom to where the group of pack wives were congregating. They were supposed to have helped me with planning this event, being my eyes and ears as I was stuck at home.
Instead, they had totally commandeered everything. The colors were not what I had chosen and directed them to use, nor were the flowers, the layout, the band, or even the food! They had changed everything with no consideration for my selections. They had told me if I could see it in person then I would understand. And they pretended to lose connection with me whenever I had tried to push back.
Now, they couldn’t run or hide from me. I was right here, walking toward them.
They had been talking about something, but as I approached they quieted their voices.
“Luna,” one of them said. “What do you think of the decorations?”
If she had been attempting to annoy me, she had succeeded. But I wasn’t going to play nice this time, as I might have done in the past.
So much was riding on tonight, and by disobeying my selections, by going behind my back, they had picked the wrong night to see how far they could push me. I was already irritated, but now, I was beyond the point of holding back. I no longer cared what they thought.
“You have not included any of my selections,” I said.
“I think you can agree, being here now, that we did a good job,” said one of the wives.
Honestly? No. Mauve was such a pale green that it got lost against the cream colored walls. None of the foods I had seen accounted for any potential nut allergies or vegetarian preference. And the band they had hired was just a string quartet instead of the full orchestra. I wasn’t sure they would be properly heard from the back of the ballroom.
“I look around and all I see is your blatant disrespect against me,” I said.
They all straightened at my harsh tone, perhaps only now finally realizing that I was not fooling around this time.
“Luna, we-”
I didn’t let her finish, continuing, “I’m done pretending that your acts of defiance against me are normal or cute or whatever else you are thinking. This ends tonight. Congratulations on your planning tonight, ladies, but you will not be assisting me with any future planning activities.”
The ladies’ faces paled, stricken.

“But we’ve always helped, even before you were Luna,” said one of them.
“Well that ends tonight,” I said firmly. “I don’t need the kind of help you offer.”
I had meant for this to be a private conversation, but the wives were popular and a few of the guests had made their way over to us since the conversation had first begun. Those guests could hear my words clearly, it seemed, including my now firing of the pack wives as my planning assistants.
