Claire’s POV

Ruth nodded, then turned toward Sienna, who seemed to be holding back her tears, her face somewhat splotchy.

Richard’s eyes filled with fondness as he took in the sight of his daughter. Sienna was looking back with an apprehensive kind of hope, like she really wanted this to work.

Ruth stepped between them. “Richard, this is our daughter, Sienna. Sienna, I am pleased to introduce you to the Rogue King, your father, Richard.”

Sienna gasped at the title. She must have thought this made her something like a princess.

Maybe it did.

“My daughter,” Richard said, accepted her at one. He opened his arms, and Sienna immediately folded into them for a hug.

I was somewhat taken aback by the organization of this place, and the authority of Richard, who seemed to commander the room just by standing in it.

A rogue leader would need to be brave, I supposed, but he seemed the right kind of character to not just generate followers, but loyalty as well, from how enamored the others in this room seemed to be.

Maybe he wasn’t just a leader, after all. Maybe, to them, he was the true King.

That meant that Alpha King Benedict, Damien, and Jake had no idea the storm they were in for.

All I had to do was find a way to push this cannon of a man in the right direction, and then watch him fire.

Sienna’s POV

For all of my life, love has come with conditions. I was never Mommy and Daddy’s little girl. I was always the problem child.

Oh, look, Sienna’s having another tantrum.

Why don’t you teach that kid better?

Why don’t you do something about her?

I had to be silent to be liked. Whenever I was myself, I was too mean or there’s something wrong with her.

That rift had always existed with the people I had thought were my parents. When Amelia showed up, everything got even worse. She filled the place in their hearts where I had been trying to fit for years, while I was kicked totally to the side, sent away and forgotten.

I’d never been simply loved. I never had anyone hold me because they loved me so much, they couldn’t help themselves.

At least, I hadn’t until this moment.

And for the first time in maybe my entire life, I finally felt seen. I felt like I belonged.

My emotions overwhelmed me, and I started to cry. My father held onto me even tighter, holding me as he would a child, as I sobbed so hard my shoulders shook. They weren’t all bad tears. It felt as if my heart was healing, but with that healing came pain, like I was trying to peel away a coat that was too tight and it pinched at my skin as I removed it.

“You are my daughter,” Richard said. When I finally stopped crying, now just sniffling instead, he stepped back from me and looked around to everyone else in the room. “Sienna is my heir.”

Everyone in the room, serious men and women, nodded as Richard said so, like that was something easily believed and accepted. I had to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t dreaming

To go from being the unwanted daughter… to being loved at a glance… and now also an heir? Sure, the rogue territory wasn’t officially recognized by the other packs or the Alpha King, but I could tell just from entering this place, how large and organized the rogues truly were.
