Ran Away Pregnant Came Back Alpha Heiress (Amelia and Damien) novel Chapter 500

Chapter 500

Claire’s POV

News from Damien and Jake’s packs came in waves, depending on when the spies from those places returned to the rogue territory. Even after they did, we had to wait for Richard to be briefed, and then for the journalist in town to write the news stories and the newspaper group to print them.

Newspaper releases were a big deal, and a crowd of rogues would gather outside of the news stand, waiting until we were able to get our hands on the latest paper.

I had become a regular among the waiting crowd, still eager for any news of the pack.

Sienna and the others had made this place their home. Even Ian was starting to fit in, though he was something like a fish out of water. He seemed more in love with Sienna every day, which still baffled me. I had thought his affections for her were just an act to manipulate her. Apparently not.

They were getting complacent, even with war on the horizon. Maybe, in time, they might even forget about Amelia and Jake and Damien and all the hurt that they’ve caused.

I never would. I held onto my anger as fiercely as I had the first moment Damien brought that human back as his mate, choosing some outsider over the best female of the pack – me.

I would never forgive that betrayal.

Finally, the newspaper became available. I made my way to the front and collected one for myself. As I stepped away, I immediately stopped to read it, as many others around me had done.

The first headline gave me pause: Damien Holds Tournament to Find Champion of His Pack.

When I headed to Richard’s house, of course he already knew. The spies would have spoken to him first, as well as those in his secret council. It annoyed me that Sienna and Ian also seemed to know. It made me feel like I was the odd one out.

I hated that feeling.

Still, I knew how to play along, and how to bide my time. I had to play nice with the rogues to get my own

revenge.

Then I’d work on getting my reputation back to something more promising.

At least, I was still welcomed into the house. I hadn’t been alerted of the news, but they still allowed me in the meetings.

Today, Richard, Ruth, Sienna, Ian, and I, along with several of Richard’s most loyal rogues were standing out behind the house where before Sienna and I had watched the rogues spar and train for war.

Now, the loyal rogues stood in a line in front of their Rogue King, as he walked in front of them, looking each one over critically.

“They think by having this tournament that they will find their champion,” Richard said. “But we will send our own champion, and show them just how weak they truly are.’

Richard’s plan was simple. The online sign-ups for Damien’s tournament allowed for anonymous entries. One of Richard’s spies in the pack had already signed up under a moniker: Crow.

Richard walked back and forth down the line of warriors, looking for his champion. Two from the end he stopped.

This man, Peter, was the tallest and broadest of the group. I’d seen him sparring myself, and he seemed to possess a natural talent for it. He had even last the longest against Richard, though Richard had ultimately won.

Richard wasn’t the Alpha of a pack, but he had the same strength and speed as one. I imagined he would have liked to join the tournament himself to prove it.

But that would go against his plan.

Sending his champion was a trade-off. After winning, Crow was to reveal himself as a rogue, showing the world that the rogues were stronger and better than any pack wolf. He wanted the pack members to be afraid, and would then use that fear as a tool to help with his war.

It was a sound plan, but it meant sacrificing his champion. They would be captured after the tournament and be unable to fight in the war. That was likely why Richard hadn’t simply picked Peter from the beginning, knowing he would lose him from his lines.

Eventually though, Richard made his choice, and Peter was to be our Crow.

Sienna standing beside me, whispered to me, “The pack members don’t stand a chance. I wish I could see the looks on their faces myself.”

I thought a moment, then remembered the potions that had hidden our identities so well in the past. “Why can’t we?”

Sienna glanced at me.

Twenty minutes later, we were both sneaking into Ruth’s bedroom. She had lines of potions on top of her dresser, though none of them were labeled.

Maybe this sneak and grab plan was going to be more difficult than I had hoped.

“Do you remember what it looked like?” Sienna asked, inspecting the potions.

I did… sort of. I remembered it was vaguely green in color, but so were many of the potions on top of the desk.

It seemed like an immensely bad idea to simply guess. One could be a disguise potion, but it could also be a deadly poison. Who knew what witches got up to? Especially one that was planning for war?

Before we could make up our minds on what to do, I voice spoke from the doorway.

“What are you two doing in here?”

Sienna jumped, but I turned more slowly.

Ruth was standing in the doorway. She didn’t look angry by the intrusion, more… curious.

Hopefully that would work in our favor.

“We just wanted to go see the tournament in person,” Sienna said. “We wanted to see a rogue crush all the pack warriors.”

Ruth’s expression brightened. Definitely not angry then.

“I admire your rebellious spirits,” Ruth said. Stepping forward, she moved toward the dresser and plucked a pair of bottles into her hands. “But next time, just ask. Richard and I, and a few of his council, were already planning on sneaking into the event. I see no reason why you both can’t join us when the time comes.”

Sienna smiled brightly. “Thank you, Mom.”

My mood also lifted, though I nodded, more than gave gratitude aloud.

Inside, I couldn’t wait to watch Peter beat every pack warrior to a pulp. It wouldn’t be the same as revenge, but it was close.
