Chapter 506
Jake’s POV
“So many people,” Mom said as we slowly made our way through the event space, trying to get to the main bleachers where the Alphas and honored guests were supposed to sit.
I was still moving slower than I liked, still using a cane. But that I was able to be here at all was a testament to my care and my improving health. I was starting to feel like I was under home arrest, only moving from the bedroom to the office and back.
It was nice to see some of the rest of the world, even if that rest of the world was Damien’s pack rather than my
own.
Baby steps. And I was supposed to be on vacation.
“Are you feeling alright?” Dad asked me. My parents were on either side of me, buffering me from the crowd. Even so, I was annoyed at myself for giving some of my discomfort away.
I really needed to sit down.
“I see Benedict over there,” Mom said. “We’re close.”
“Just a bit farther,” Dad agreed.
We continued forward through a security checkpoint and were then allowed up to the reserved bleachers. The stairs were somewhat harrowing, but I refused to give up, especially around such a large crowd. When we reached the top though, I was happy to take a seat near Uncle Benedict and catch my breath a minute.
Curiously, Damien was there, speaking to someone on the other side of the bleacher. As he walked over, I noticed Amelia wasn’t with him.
This was particularly troubling because seeing Amelia was most of the reason I had made this trip. My family and I had much to apologize to her about, and we had hoped that in using this tournament as an excuse to visit, we would have the chance to speak with her and set things right.
My parents had been especially hard on themselves. I tried to take on the full responsibility many times. After all, it had been my idea convince Amelia that she was actually Annette, and I had convinced everyone else to go along with it.
Mom especially had wanted to tell Amelia the truth many times, and had nearly done so on occasion. But I had been the one to convince her to hold her tongue.
Amelia could be angry with me if she wished it. I would apologize but I would understand if it wasn’t accepted. Our parents were innocent though. I hoped Amelia could find it in her heart to forgive them, especially with their advancing age. They had a while to go yet, hopefully, but at some point it was never a good idea to delay things. Anything could happen.
As Damien returned and greeted us, I asked, “Where is Amelia? Is she not here?”
“She didn’t want to come,” Damien said. “Though… outside of the training we’ve been doing, she hasn’t wanted to talk to me much at all.”

“The girls aren’t here either,” Mom said. I knew she missed them terribly.
“No children are,” Damien replied. “We have been trying to keep the children free from the worries of war. They are having an event at the school right now. Painting and dancing and other activities.”
“Good,” Dad said. “That’s good. The young ones should be protected.”
While Mom and Dad were distracted with talk of the girls, I remained caught up on something that Damien said, that Amelia hasn’t wanted to talk to him much at all.
That must have meant that he hadn’t made much progress with her, after her remembering her past and learning the truth. Since they were mated and still unable to solve their differences, I worried this meant that there was even less chance for Amelia to forgive us, her family, who should have had her back from the start.
We would still try of course. And we’d keep trying, never giving up until Amelia told us to go out of her life forever or she finally could see her way to forgiveness. Whatever she needed us to do, we would do. I wanted my sister back, and my parents wanted their daughter.
For a little while, mostly so I could get the chance to catch my breath, we stayed and chatted with Damien and Benedict, but soon, the noise of the crowd became so loud that we couldn’t even hear ourselves think.
Then, we said goodbye for now and made our way back to the street and to our car. Again, I moved much slower than I liked, even more so now that my energy was failing me. My body might have preferred us wait longer for me to heal, but my urge to make up with Amelia didn’t allow me to rest, regardless of what my body wanted.
When we finally reached the car, I slumped into the backseat, while Mom and Dad took the front two spots. Mom looked back at me worriedly while Dad started to drive.
“Are we sure we shouldn’t wait a bit?” Mom asked. “We can go to the hotel and rest for a while. I’m sure Amelia would understand, given your condition.”
“I’m fine, Mom,” I said. I wasn’t, but I wanted to be. Right now, with how determined I was, these were one and the same. Or at least they had to be. I wasn’t going to give up.
I was Aloha, and I had an Alpha’s pride,
Dad drove us to Damien’s estate. After our last run in with the guards, we had been added to a permanent guest list, so we weren’t given much trouble as we parked. Though the guard at the door seemed more confused to see us than annoyed.
“I’m sorry, there’s no one home right now,” he said. “Did you want to relax inside? I’m not sure when anyone will return.”
I blinked a few times. My parents and I looked at each other.
“No one’s home?” Mom asked. “Where’s Amelia?”
“She left earlier today, ma’am,” the guard said. “She said she was going to the tournament.”
How could that be? She hadn’t been at the event. Unless she had arrived after we left? But the guard made it seem like she had been gone for a while.
“Maybe we should try calling Damien,” I said, and pulled out my phone. Leaning heavily on my cane, I used my

other hand to open my phone and try to call Damien.
The phone rang and rang but no one ever picked up.
“He’s not answering,” I said.
“It was so loud out there, he probably can’t hear it,” Mom said.
I frowned, and tried again. And then again.
