Ran Away Pregnant Came Back Alpha Heiress (Amelia and Damien) novel Chapter 507

Chapter 507

Amelia’s POV

I took a breath, trying to steady myself, though that seemed an impossible task at this moment. The line of contenders started moving. I was near the back of the line, but even from here I could see Damien and Uncle Benedict up in the highest bleachers, ready to watch the tournament and judge the contenders.

I hoped my disguise held.

But maybe more than that, I hoped I could make a good showing in the tournament. I didn’t need to win more than a couple fights. I just wanted to be able to hold my own, and prove to everyone that I was a worthy warrior who could help protect my mate and my pack on the battlefield.

I wanted everyone – but mostly Damien – to see me for my full potential.

The crowd parted for our little parade, with everyone looking at us. Some already had favorites, and were cheering for them. As Shadow, no one knew who I was. I was entirely anonymous. People looked at me curiously, but no one cheered for me. Why would they? I was no one to them.

At least, not yet.

Fortunately, I was happy to have the anonymity at this moment. I didn’t want anyone to recognize me, and that seemed to be working in my favor in this moment. I knew almost everyone we walked by, and that recognition never sparked in their own eyes.

Even the pack wives didn’t know me.

Damien would be the ultimate test however, and I braced myself as I entered into the final ring, the grandest of the lot, where the royal bleachers were facing.

Damien looked down at each contender, giving each of us a full once over, like he was inspecting us.

When it was my turn, my heart raced and I turned away, afraid to meet his gaze. If I met his gaze, I was sure he would know me. It was much safer and easier to pretend not to be seen.

I braced myself, expecting to hear him call my name, disrupting the entire ceremony just to pull me out of it. Instead, blessedly, I was allowed to keep walking.

The potion and the disguise must have worked. He didn’t see me! Or, if he saw me, he didn’t immediately recognize me! I would have to continue to be careful, but this was such a good feeling, I allowed myself a moment of relief.

I was going to get to fight. I was going to get to prove myself.

As we continued walking, all of us were brought in front of the tournament scoreboard. Looking at it, we could see the entire list of contenders as well as who each of us would fight for our first match and in what location.

Looking at the board, it seemed like I would need to win 4 matches to make it to the finals. My first match was with Paul. I tried to think and remembered a somewhat stalky man, a bit on the heavier side. I wasn’t going to underestimate anyone. That weight could be hiding extra muscle.

Our match was going to be in one of the outer sparring rings, the ones without any seats or fanfare. There

mustn’t have been very high expectations for our fight.

Well, it didn’t matter what anyone else thought. As long as I could win, to heck with everything else.

After the parade had finished, we were each led to our specific sparring areas. I stepped into the ring opposite Paul. He looked much more intimidating now that we were facing each other, but I wasn’t going to let that make me afraid.

My determination was going to win me the day here, if nothing else. I was simply unwilling to lose.

Paul and I shook hands, as per stipulated in the rules. It was a nice practice regardless. After all, we were still pack members and would remain pack members regardless of who would win this fight. There was no place here for cruel words or unkind feelings.

We’d each do our best and fight our hardest. But on the other side, we would need to be friends again.

After the handshake, we split up again, going back to our respective sides.

The referee stepped between us. “Remember, the present rules are to fight only in human form. Any wolf shift will result in disqualification. Keep it clean, keep it fair. May the best warrior win.”

The referee nodded at us both and then stepped back, allowing us space to stretch and prepare.

Then, just as I was getting into attack stance, the bell rang, indicating it was time to fight. I stepped inched forward, my fists at the ready.

Paul didn’t have much of a stance. For a moment, I hoped that maybe this would be one of the easier fights. Perhaps Paul was unprepared or he got talked into this or something.

But then, I zipped it and landed two quick punches on his belly in quick succession. One, two!

Paul just grinned. “I didn’t feel a thing.”

Oh. Oh no. I hadn’t prepared for this. The training videos didn’t talk about what to do if someone’s body weight distribution seemed to insulate the punches.

Paul leaned forward then, grabbing for me. I quickly ducked under his arm.

Okay, he was durable, but he was slow. I could use that to my advantage. I had to. I couldn’t lose. I had to win.

But if I wasn’t strong enough to hurt him with my punch, then how was I going to win?

I had an idea then, of wearing him down. My stamina was pretty strong. Maybe he would tire out and finally feel something.

It wouldn’t be the most exciting of wins, but no one was really watching anyway.

A win was a win, no matter what it looked like.

So I put my plan in action, dodging each of Paul’s attempts to grab or attack me, while making my punches where I could.

Quickly, he did start to show, proving that he had underprepared for this event despite his natural advantages.

He was clumsy on his feet too, nearly falling over himself as he tried to grab me.

Then, on his last grand attempted, seeing my opening, I stuck my foot out and tripped him.

The man fell, crashing into the ground so hard he made a loud umph.
