Chapter 508
Chapter 508
Damien’s POV
As the sparring ring where the VIP bleachers were set up was the biggest and most important of the lot, it surprised me when the unknown named only Crow walked into the ring. He must have done exceptionally well during his first fight to have been considered for this spot so quickly. This space was supposed to be for only the most high-ranking fights.
“Do we have any idea who he really is?” I asked Keegan who had hurried to join me after running downstairs to speak with the organizers for a moment.
Despite Alpha King Benedict’s many assurances that have anonymous fighters in the tournament was expected, I still felt uneasy about it. Now that I had seen Crow in the flesh, I was even less at ease.
For one thing, this man was huge, tall and broad, all muscle. I knew every warrior in my pack, especially those of this size. All of them had already been accounted for today.
“You worry too much,” Benedict said. “He could be a farmer for all we know. Just because he’s built like a truck doesn’t mean he’s a warrior.”
I wanted to believe that, but I had a suspicion that I couldn’t let go of.
Maybe I was being paranoid, as Benedict might have been suggesting, but I just wasn’t sure.
Without being able to see his face behind his skull mask, and without having a name beyond the fake one he had given, this man could have been anyone from anywhere.
“I can keep asking around,” Keegan said. “But to my knowledge, he hasn’t revealed his identity to anyone. I was told that he mastered his first fight, but even when he got checked out by one of the healers after, he refused to remove his mask.”
“It just adds to the excitement,” Benedict said.
I still didn’t feel good about this, but if he was impressive enough in his first fight to have ended up here, I was eager to watch him fight. Maybe his fighting style would give something about him away.
Crow’s opponent was one of my best warriors named James. James and I often trained together, and though he lacked the brute strength and speed of an Alpha, he held his own very well, never falling too far behind me. In the spars I had witnessed, he had a winning record.
I fully expected him to be a main contender today.
The opponents shook hands and separated. Since this wasn’t anyone’s first fight of the day, the referee’s instruction was brief. Before too long, the referee stepped back and the bell rang, signaling the start of the fight.
Crow pounced at once, showing a very aggressive style of fighting. He gave James an onslaught of attacks, keeping James on the defensive.
Punch after punch. Block after block.
Before long, James was already being pushed back to the edge of the ring. If he stepped out of it, he would be disqualified.

I knew just how strong was, and to see him be pushed like this was alarming – but also incredibly impressive.
“Whoever this Crow is, you need to move him onto the front lines,” Benedict said. “He should bein the main battle force, fighting like that. Look at him. It’s like he was born to fight.”
“I’m not sure,” I said.
“You can’t be serious,” Benedict said, glancing at me sideways for a moment before looking back to the fight.
James was valiantly blocking, but every time he tried to get in his own punch, he was pummeled again. His heels were near the line. If he didn’t do something, and soon, he was going to be disqualified.
“Look at the way Crow is fighting,” I said, trying to put words to my uneasy feeling – the one that was only growing inside of me. “It’s not like any fighting stance I’ve ever seen trained. It’s… desperate.”
Benedict and Keegan both looked closer. For the first time since the fight started, Benedict started to frown.
“Perhaps he was a prisoner,” Benedict said. “I’ve seen imprisoned men fight like this before. And that would explain why he would hide his face.”
It would, but if he had been a prisoner, it raised the question, what had he been imprisoned for?
“He fights like he’s from the wilds,” I said.
We watched as Crow finally pushed James out of bounds, ruining James’s chances at being the pack champion. The crowd went wild, cheering for Crow, even chanting his name. He raised his fists high up in the air and people screamed.
“I’m going to find out more about this man,” I said.
Leaving the bleachers, I went down to the healers’ tent. Just as I came in through the flap, Healer Eve was shoving something bulky into a cabinet. She quickly turned her back to it, though continued to stand in front of it like she was worried the doors were going to pop open again.
That was… odd, but I didn’t know Healer Eve all that well. Maybe she was just like that.
“Eve,” I said. “Thank you for being here.”
“I was pleased to volunteer,” she said, her eyes continually darting to the side. She still hadn’t moved away from the cabinet. “Everyone has to do their part.”
“Yes…”
I frowned a little, starting to wonder if I was the problem here, like Benedict had been suggesting. If I was starting to find Eve suspicious, then that seemed like a distinct possibility. Eve was one of the more trustworthy people of any pack, and a top notch healer on top of it.
If I was finding Eve to be suspicious, then maybe I really was paranoid.
I shook my head, trying to clear my thoughts.
“Maybe you can help me,” I said. “I’m looking for any information about that unknown warrior… the anonymous one…”

“I haven’t seen them,” Eve said.
I blinked. “Uh… okay…”
That wasn’t what I had asked. I had asked if she had any information about him, not if she had seen him. But… maybe I was just misinterpreting. If she hadn’t seen him, then she probably wouldn’t know anything. That made sense.
“Well, if you hear anything, please let me know,” I said.
“Yes. Of course,” she said.
I pressed my mouth in a hard line. I really wanted to talk to her more and ask her more questions, but I felt like I was getting nowhere here. If anything, I was only getting more paranoid and more confused.
