Chapter 517

I was proud of my capable mate, but I would need to be dead before I would risk losing her again. There was no place riskier than the battlefield. She could be snatched away from me in a heartbeat, even if I tried to keep an

eye on her.

I hoped I would be able to talk her out of her desire to fight, but on the drive back home, I tried to recall one time in recent history that I had been able to convince her to do anything she didn’t want to do.

I did not have very many successes marked under my name.

Amelia was far removed from the meek human she had been when I first found her. I loved her even more now. I loved absolutely everything about her, including her stubbornness and her courage.

But I worried too.

“You haven’t said much,” Amelia said from the passenger side of the car. She looked out the window, away from me. “I know there’s a lot you want to say.”

“I’m trying to respect your feelings,” I said. I sighed. “I’m also trying to get my head around all this. Speaking without thinking has only gotten me in trouble in the past, and I want to try to do things right this time.”

I felt like I was on the edge of a knife with Amelia. One wrong word or action and I could lose everything.

I could lose her.

“You don’t want me to fight at the battle,” she said.

“No,” I told her. There was no use lying about that. She already knew how I felt.

“The pack champion has to be there,” she said.

“You don’t,” I replied.

“I do.”

“Amelia, I’m glad you are a capable fighter. I am. That means you will be more able to protect our children if the battle should fail and the war finds you where you are hiding.”

“I’m not hiding anywhere, Damien. I’m the pack champion. How is that not enough to convince you that I should be at your side?”

“I’ll never be convinced,” I said. “You could somehow miraculously be as strong as an Alpha, and I still wouldn’t want you there.”

“Why? Why can’t you trust me?”

“Why can’t you just do what I’m asking?” I countered. “Is it so wrong for me to want our children protected?”

“Of course now,” she said. “But what about you? Who is going to protect you?”

“I don’t need protected, Amelia. I’m the Alpha.”

She opened her mouth like she wanted to keep arguing, though I had no idea what she would have said to top my

remark.

Whatever it was never made its way to my ears, because as we pulled up to our estate, Jake, Martin, and Lillian were still there, talking with the guards.

Seeing them, Amelia went suddenly very quiet.
