Chapter 525

Damien’s POV
I ran deep into the forest, mostly allowing my wolf to take over, my wild instincts leading the way. I was trying to pull back from my thoughts, to forget all my worries for a while, but there was no stopping the knowledge I had now.
Amelia and I were at a fork in the road of our relationship, and I had a choice to make. If I didn’t trust Amelia to be able to stand up for herself and protect herself in the fight, I would lose her.
She was right. She had proven herself. She won the tournament. She crossed the rogue border and returned unharmed with our lost children.
Yet still I was still seeing her as the human I had fallen in love with and plucked from the human realm.
She wasn’t that woman anymore, she as so much more.
She was her own capable warrior now. Even her family could see it. Jake, too, who I thought would be on my side in this, given all the lies he had told to protect Amelia in the past.
Instead, I was the odd one out here. The only one who couldn’t imagine Amelia on a battlefield.
Because of that, I was pushing her away and making her hate me.
If I wanted to keep her, and I very much did, then I needed to reframe my thinking. I had to find a way to repress my overprotective urges and see her as a warrior capable enough to stand at my side, to watch my back as I would watch hers.
It was difficult, having been the sole protector for so long. But I had to do it. For both of us.
I pushed my body to the limit, running throughout the night and into the morning. When the sun was overhead,
I finally stopped, collapsing into the dirt, in my human form once more.
I stared up at the sky through the trees, and then I reached for my phone.
I wasn’t ready to face Amelia again yet, but there was someone else I’d been wanting to talk to. To thank.
I didn’t know if Victoria still had the same number as she had in the past, but as that was the only number I had for her, I was willing to try it.
I found her old contact, her old number, and I hit call.
The phone started ringing. So it was still in service, still in use, though that didn’t mean it would be Victoria who answered. Even if it was, there was no guarantee she would pick up.
My number hadn’t changed. If this number was still hers, and she saw me calling, she might just block me.
The phone rang for a while. I waited for voicemail but it never picked up. Yet, I couldn’t bring myself to hang up. I hated what my sister had done in the past, but I still loved her.
Family was a strange thing, and hearts were complicated.
Finally, after what felt like forever, the call connected. No one said anything on the other end of the line.

“Victoria?” Lasked.
I waited a moment. Then, her voice came through, “I didn’t think it’d actually be you. All these years you could have called and never did.”
“You are a rogue, Victoria. And after what you did to Amella back then… I couldn’t,”
Then why are you calling now?”
“Things are different now.”
“Because of what happened yesterday,” she said. It was not a question.
“Yes.” I cleared my throat. “I wanted to thank you. Because of you, my mate and children were able to return to me unharmed,”
“You should keep a better eye on them,” she said. “But… the kids were decent. My own won’t stop talking about them. And Amelia seemed a lot stronger than the last time I had dealt with her.”
“She is strong,” I said.
Victoria hummed.
Silence fell between us, but we both stayed on the call. I imagined her like I was, phone pressed to her ear, unsure what to say but unwilling to break the connection we’d made now after so many years apart.
“Will you and your children be safe in the war?” I asked.
“The kids and I are exempt from it,” she said, “But Ethan is duty-bound to fight. Many of the rogues are, even those that want to stay out of it, like Ethan. We started a new life here, and it’s a good one, even with the hard work it takes to maintain it.”
I considered what she was saying carefully. “Why can’t he and the others just say no?”
“Richard. He calls himself the Rogue King. He has dreams of grandeur. He’s as strong as an Alpha. I suppose for him, leading the rogues isn’t enough. And he doesn’t just want your pack either. He wants to take down Alpha King Benedict and replace him. He says that will benefit us all, but I hardly see how anything would be any different. Same packs, same politics, different leader. Most of us just want to be left alone.”
“And you can’t turn against him?” Damien asked.
“No. His strength and leadership is what kept the rogues together this long. We have a nice community now. A town. I just wish he could see that and continue to want to care for it, instead of being swallowed by his need for revenge and his pride. He has many followers to. We cannot turn against him.”
“Victoria,” I said. “If you could tell me when the rogue attack is set to occur, I can make sure that no civilians are harmed on either side. We could meet in an actual battlefield, away from both our towns, and solve our problems by the way of the wolf.”
“You called me to manipulate me.”
“No,” I said firmly. “My thanks is why I called you. The rest is in a hope to resolve this while limiting the collateral damage as much as possible.”

She was quiet a moment. That she hadn’t hung up on me yet gave me hope that she was at least thinking it over.
“I want Ethan protected,” she said. “Captured and released, not killed. If it comes to that.”
“I will tell my warriors,” I said. “Many still think fondly of Ethan and all he did for the pack. I can’t promise he won’t be harmed, but I will do my best to make sure he returns to you alive. I’m sorry, but that’s the best I can
