**TITLE: Night Whispers Forgotten Names – Colin Shah**
**Chapter 9**
**Amelia POV**
I did it. I finally mustered the courage to share the news with Damien that had once filled me with so much joy. Yet, in that moment, desperation clawed at my throat, and fear gripped my heart as I called out to him, my voice echoing in the empty space between us. He walked away without even turning back, and my words fell into the silence, unheard and unacknowledged.
And then, just like that, the room felt unbearably vacant.
He left me there, I thought, my heart sinking deeper into despair. Just like that, he was gone. I could hardly wrap my mind around it.
I rapped my knuckles against the door, my pulse quickening. “Hello? Is anyone out there?”
“Yes,” came Lydia’s voice, surprisingly close on the other side.
I flinched, instinctively stepping back as if her voice had physically struck me. Damien had made it abundantly clear that I was not to be mistreated, but the bitter memory of Jeremy’s harshness lingered in my mind, making me hesitate.
“I – um, where is Damien?” I asked, my voice trembling slightly.
“Alpha Damien had to leave. He has much business to attend to,” she replied, her tone clipped yet respectful.
Business. That word twisted in my gut like a knife. I knew all too well what that meant. Every time I heard it, my thoughts spiraled to Claire and her baby, the so-called “pack business” that I was expected to accept without question.
“Do you need anything, Luna? Are you hungry?” Lydia’s inquiry broke through my spiral of thoughts, offering a glimmer of relief. Although I knew she would never be my friend, her tone held a respect that was comforting. It was a stark contrast to the way I had been treated before.
I sighed, my stomach grumbling audibly in response to her question. They had fed me at the hospital, but now, with the new life growing inside me, my body was demanding more sustenance than ever.
My life felt like a jigsaw puzzle with missing pieces, and I had no clue how I would navigate my way back to the human realm. But one thing was clear: I would do everything I could to protect my baby.
“Yes, please. A lot of it,” I replied, my voice firmer this time.
“Ugh, it stinks of human in here,” she declared with a dramatic flair, striding over to the window in her sky-high heels and flinging it open. The crisp, invigorating scent of the woods flooded the room, but it did little to ease my discomfort.
“What do you want, Victoria?” I shot back, my voice steady despite the unease that bubbled within me. I had no doubt that her presence was not a friendly one, and I braced myself for the onslaught of whatever venomous words she had prepared.
Her smile was unsettling, a clear indication that she relished the role of the bearer of bad news.
“As you know, Claire comes from a highly respected pack family. Her father was the previous Beta, and her brother is the current Beta. A pureblood pedigree, unlike some people,” she sneered, her tone dripping with disdain.
If I weren’t feeling so queasy, her snotty attitude might have been amusing. But the growing knot in my stomach told me this was far from a harmless jab.
“As such, her parents have decided they don’t want their pregnant daughter to be seen without a proper title. After all, she is carrying the Alpha’s heir. She deserves to be shown respect within the pack,” she continued, her smile widening as if she were enjoying a particularly juicy piece of gossip.
“So, Damien has issued a decree. You will be stripped of your title and will become the Alpha’s human companion, kept tucked away out of sight at his estate. Claire, meanwhile, will be given the title of Luna and will play the role of the Alpha’s wife. The way things should have been all along.”
Stunned, I stood frozen, struggling to process the weight of her words. He had already issued a decree? That meant the entire pack would soon be aware of my humiliation.
