After she hung up, Milana pressed her hand against her chest, trying to calm her racing heart. She should have been happy. Her son finally had a chance. But all she could think about was Sandy and the way she looked at them.
This was her own daughter, the girl she’d searched for all these years. Milana just wanted Sandy to understand for once how hard it was, how much pressure they were under as parents. If they had to drag her onto the operating table, it would be a disaster for everyone.
Upstairs, Sandy had locked herself in her room and cried until her eyes were swollen and red. When she looked in the mirror, her face blotchy and puffy, she just felt ridiculous.
Family, love, all of it felt like nonsense. They didn’t want her. They only wanted her kidney to save their precious son.
She couldn’t figure out what she’d done to deserve this. Had she done something wrong? Why was life always so cruel?
She’d spent eighteen long years with the White family, living every day with a foster father who gambled away anything they had. Frank was always angry, always shouting or hitting her. When she was little, she never knew if there would be food on the table. When she was old enough to make a little money, she spent it all just to support Frank’s gambling and drinking.
Then one day, out of nowhere, she found out she was the long-lost daughter of the richest man in Lakeview Town. No one could ever understand what that moment felt like. It was as if her wildest dreams had come true.
She was no longer some poor girl from the countryside. She was an heiress.
She could finally leave the White family behind, escape that awful little town, and move into the grand Smith family estate. Suddenly she had everything she’d ever wanted—designer clothes, bags, makeup, fancy cars, a mansion, even a fiancé from a powerful family.
It all felt too good to be real.
But just as she was starting to believe in her new life, Lydia came along and ruined everything. She told her the truth. All of it had been a lie.
A knock sounded at the door. “Sandy? Sandy?”
It was Milana’s voice, soft and hesitant.
She looked so happy, it was like she hadn’t even heard the word “condition.”
Sandy looked her straight in the eye. “I have one condition.”
Milana hesitated, biting back her frustration, but she forced a smile. “Of course, Sandy. As long as you say yes, your father and I will make it up to you. I promise.”
“I want half of the Smith family’s assets.” Sandy’s tone was sharp, and she wasn’t about to fall for any more empty promises. If they wanted her kidney, she wanted half the family fortune. Otherwise, she would never sign the consent form.
Milana’s smile froze in place.
Sandy didn’t stop. “I give him a kidney, and he gives me half the Smith family’s wealth. That’s fair, isn’t it?”
