Dr. Simpson and Dr. Hady were by her side, just like always, steady and reliable as her lead assistants.
If this surgery worked, it would be another miracle in medical history. The honor of witnessing that miracle unfold right in front of them was almost overwhelming.
Lydia’s hand was steady as she guided the scalpel across Sandy’s abdomen, her touch so light it barely seemed to graze the skin. She pulled back the layers with practiced ease, revealing the kidney and lifting it out in one smooth motion. Every move she made was seamless, almost like a choreographed dance, and everyone watching could hardly believe how skilled and quick she was.
Dr. Hady stepped in to take care of the next steps, and Lydia shifted her focus to Luke. She leaned over him, making a careful incision.
The real challenge here wasn’t Sandy. It was Luke. He was hanging on by a thread, his body so weak it seemed like he might slip away at any moment. The only kidney he had left was already dead. Lydia had to move fast and accurate, remove the ruined organ, and get the new kidney in place, making sure the blood flow stayed just right.
This part could drag on for three, maybe four hours. It demanded absolute precision, flawless technique, and the kind of experience that could handle anything unexpected. There was zero room for mistakes.
Everyone was on edge, barely breathing, eyes never leaving Lydia as she tried to pull a dying man back from the edge.
Lydia was locked in, her concentration unshakable. Her sharp eyes never missed a thing. Her long, agile hands moved almost like she was weaving something beautiful, her calm and focus never wavering, no matter how intense things got.
Time crawled by, minutes stretching into hours. Midnight came and went. Six hours had passed since the operation started, but still, there was no news. Outside the operating room, Milana was pacing, so anxious she nearly fainted.
“It’s been six hours. Can Lydia really handle this? What if something went wrong?
“Honey, can you send someone in to check on them?
“I can’t take this waiting anymore.
“This is all my fault. I never should have let Lydia use our son for this. She’s just a kid. Even if she studied under ‘Miracle Hands,’ how long could she possibly have trained? I don’t know how I ever agreed to this.”
Luke was their only son. If something happened to him, the Smith family line would end here.
“Just pray for a miracle. Stop thinking about the worst.”
The next hour felt endless, but finally, the light above the operating room door went out.
Milana gasped, clutching Jenson’s arm. “It’s over. Honey, does that mean Luke’s okay?”
Jenson was shaking, both scared and hopeful, his hands pressed together in silent prayer. Please, Lydia, don’t let us down. This has to work.
There was a click and the operating room doors slowly opened.

Every chapter is missing a sentence from the end of every chapter. It’s frustrating to try guess what’s missing or said...
