Lucinda’s mood sank even lower. “I guess I was just too naive.”
Ever since she was a little girl, she’d always thought of Connor as her fiancé. She never doubted for a second that he saw her in the same way.
Turns out, she’d been wrong about everything.
“Lucinda, you can’t just sit there and let this happen! You’re Connor’s real fiancée. Who does this shameless bitch think she is? If she dares to steal your man, we should drag her out into the street and let everyone see what happens to women like her. She wants to seduce someone else’s fiancé? Not on my watch!”
Lucinda hadn’t expected her friend to get this worked up over a lie she’d made up on the spot. She quickly tried to calm her down. “Paige, really, it’s okay. Connor doesn’t even like her. There’s nothing between them. He called me and apologized already.”
Paige finally started to cool off. “Are you sure Connor doesn’t feel anything for her?”
Lucinda looked down, her voice soft. “He’s always been so reserved, but he still called to explain everything and even came by today. I just… I just need some time to clear my head.”
She was really saying, thank you for caring, but I don’t want to make a big deal out of this.
Paige got it. This was Connor, after all, not just any rich guy. If Lucinda pushed things too far and made him angry, the fallout would be impossible to handle.
Besides, Paige knew how much Lucinda loved him. When a woman loves someone more than he loves her, she always ends up at a disadvantage.
And Lucinda had fallen hard for Connor. There was no changing that.
“Alright, Lucinda. But you need to be careful. Don’t let any other woman get close to Connor. Trust me, if you give them an inch, they’ll take a mile and cause you no end of trouble.”
Lucinda nodded. “I know, Paige. Thanks.”
Meanwhile, Connor had no idea that, in Lucinda’s friends’ minds, he’d already been cast as a cheating jerk.
“Connor, you’re really too thoughtful. You brought so many gifts. Thank you.” Kylie said, her growing fondness for him obvious. Cameron stood beside her, looking just as pleased.
“Connor and Lydia look amazing together. I can only imagine how beautiful their wedding will be.”
“They’re just meant to be, honestly.”
“Their kids will be ridiculously good-looking.”
“And probably super smart, too.”
Grace overheard all this and nearly burst with anger. Lately, she’d noticed the staff getting bolder, showing her less and less respect. It all went back to her sweet Lucinda losing her place in the family. If her daughter was still going to marry someone from the Jefferson family, these people would never step out of line.
Especially Tina, who had gotten way too bold lately. She just acted like she owned the place.
“Hmph. If Lydia hadn’t been found, it would be Lucinda and Connor who were the perfect couple.”

Olha a história bem boa só algumas coisas são chatas ( nesse tipo de história sempre troca as filhas pela a da empregada ou então pegam uma menina pra criar) pelo menos eles tratam a filha bem só enche o saco que até agora a Lucinda tá lá enchendo ! Fora isso tá bom Connor é um fofo a família dela a ama muito só Lucinda pra abaixar o nível do livro já era pra ter resolvido isso e fazer ela pagar mais tudo bem li um livro chinês que era parecido só algumas coisas diferentes ,ais mesma coisa tipo ela salvou o Connor no início lá ela salvava o avô dele , no chinês ela não tinha um irmão mais novo com os pais adotivos , a mãe dela tinha 2 irmãos e todos os avós estavam vivos mais história quase igual e tem coisas tipo o triângulo que lá TB tinha até a Lucinda que no chines TB ficou o livro todo aprontando só no final a família descobria e se livrava dela aí ela ia morar com o cara que ela usa pra disfarçar que não gosta do Connor aí depois ainda quase matava a irmã dele e a mãe dele que ele via como ela era...
