Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 100

Chapter 100

“I’m not lying, Mama. I promise.”

“Shut up,” she snapped suddenly. “Just stop talking.”

I pressed my lips together and tried to make myself even smaller so that she wouldn’t get even more mad with me..it seemed like she

was going to let this matter go and I breathed a lot easier.

We drove in silence for a while, and I tried to focus on the buildings passing by outside instead of the nausea that I felt in my

stomach.

Soon, Mama parked the car in front of a fancy store with a sign that said “Silver Creek School Depot.” Mama turned off the engine

and turned to me with that fake smile again.

“We’re here to get your uniform fitted for school tomorrow. You’re going to be in the advanced class, just like Ollie. Isn’t that

exciting?”

I nodded, even though the idea of scho

know how to act around them.

made me nervous. I’d never been around other kids my age except for Ollie, and I didn’t

Inside the store, a lady with gray hair, with a kind expression on her face welcomed me and Mama inside as she took me to the stand

and measured me for the uniform.

It was navy blue with silver buttons, and it was much fancier than any clothes I’d ever worn.

“My goodness,” the lady said, holding up the jacket as she turned to face us.

“This is beautiful work. The advanced class uniform is something special. You must be very smart to qualify for that program.”

“He is,” Mama said proudly, her hand on my shoulder, her hands digging in my skin as she continued speaking.

“Very gifted.”

Another lady came over to help, and she looked at the uniform with approval as well as she recognized it.

“Advanced class, oh wow, how wonderful! You’ll be in the same class as the Alpha’s son, Ollie. He’s such a sweet boy.”

“Yes,” Mama said, and I could hear something strange in her voice as she added in a much sweeter tone, like a brag but not really.

“Actually, Xenois will have two sons in that class now.”

Both ladies looked confused at her sentence as they glanced at me and back at Mama.

Chapter 100

“Two sons?” the first one asked.

“Oh yes, Mama said nodding her head as she gestured towards me again. “Riley is going to be joining the family very soon.”

The ladies looked at each other, and I saw them whispering to each other when they thought we weren’t looking. I didn’t understand

what Mama meant, but I could tell she’d said something that would start people talking about me.

When we got back in the car, I sat quietly for a few minutes, working up the courage to ask the question that had been bothering me

since we left the store.

“Mama?” I said finally, sounding small as she raised her head but didn’t look at me.

“What, Riley?”

“Why did you tell those ladies that Mr. Xenois was my daddy?”

She was quiet for so long that I thought maybe she hadn’t heard me or maybe she had and didn’t want to answer me. There were times when she ignored my questions deeming it childish to answer and then she rolled her eyes and that would be the end of it. But this time around she looked at me in the rearview mirror, and her expression was softer than I have seen in a long time.

“Don’t you want a father, baby?” she asked gently. “Don’t you want a real family?”

I thought about how Mr. Xenois had talked to me that morning, how he’d gotten down to my level and looked me in the eyes when he said nobody was in trouble when I was scared that they would shout at me for wasting food.
