Chapter 101

How he’d asked me what I wanted instead of just telling me what I should wit.

“I do,” I said slowly. “But…”

“But what?”

Mr. Xenois is Ollie’s daddy. And Ollie is my friend. I don’t want to hurt him.

Mama’s expression changed completely when she heard this as she got angry and she reached back to grab my arm, her fingers digging in tight enough

to leave marks.

‘Listen to me very carefully, Riley,” she said, her voice sounding low and threatening as she added.

“You are not going to get attached to these people. You are not going to care about what happens to them. They are not your real family. I am your

family. Do you understand me?”

“Yes, Mama,” I whispered, trying not to cry.

“These people don’t really care about you. They’re just being nice because they feel sorry for you. But I love you, Riley. I’m the only one who really loves

you. And I’m going to make sure you get everything you deserve.”

She let go of my arm, and I rubbed the spot where her fingers had been as Iodded my head slowly and answered her.

“Yes, Mama.”

‘Good. Now, I’m making your dream of having a father come true. You should be grateful.”

I wanted to question her more but I knew better than to risk her wrath.

We pulled into our driveway, and Mama turned off the car. “Go to your room she said

1ooking at me. “Stay there and stay quiet for the rest of

the day. I have things to do.”

“Yes, Mama.”

I climbed out of the car and walked to the front door, my school uniform bag heavy in my hands. Mama unlocked the door and watched me go inside,

her eyes following me as I climbed the stairs.

“Riley,” she called out just as I reached the top.

“Yes, Mama?”

“Tomorrow is going to be a very important day. You’re going to do exactly what I tell you to do, when I tell you to do it. No questions, no hesitation. Do

you understand?”

“Yes, Mama.”

“Good. Now go.”

I soon got to my room and closed the door behind me. I didn’t lock it I’d arned that lesson the hard way when I was younger.

Chapter 101

Mama didn’t like locked doors, and she had ways of making sure I remembered that.

I set my uniform bag on my small dresser and sat on my bed, staring at the wall. My room was plain and simple – just a bed, a dresser, and a small bookshelf with a few books that Mama had bought me. There were no toys, no pictures, nothing that would make it feel like a real kid’s room.

I thought about Ollie’s room, with its bright colors and shelves full of toys and books. I thought about how his parents had talked to him, how they’d listened when he talked and asked him questions because they wanted to know what he was thinking.

I pulled my knees up to my chest and wrapped my arms around them as I breathed in and out heavily trying to count to 100 to calm down.

Tomorrow I would start school, and Mama had some kind of plan that involved Mr. Xenois to become my father. I didn’t understand how that could

happen, but I’d learned not to question Mama’s plans.

All I could do was try to be good, try to do what she wanted, and hope that whatever happened from now on, it wouldn’t hurt Ollie too much, I didn’t want to hurt him, he was my friend. Because even if I wasn’t supposed to get attached, even if Mama said they didn’t really care about me, I cared about

them.

And that scared me more than anything else.
