Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 137

Chapter 137

XENOIS

“I love you too, Lumina’s voice came through softly, and for a moment, hope rose in my chest like the sun rays were breaking

through storm clouds.

But then she continued, and each word felt like a knife stab in my guts and it was being twisted.

“But Xenois, I can’t keep doing this. The back and forth between us, the uncertainty, the pain… it’s destroying all of us. Maybe we need time to really think about what we want, whether what we have is really worth fighting for or if we should consider… a mate

rejection.”

69

“No,” I said immediately, my voice sounding raw with pain and desperation as I tried to push down my panic. I was not going to give

them up so easily.

“Lumina, please don’t say that, you can’t tell me that you want that. I know now. I understand everything that went wrong.”

“You understand what exactly?” she asked, and there was exhaustion in her voice that made my heart ache even more.

“I had a dream,” I began, knowing how insane it sounded but needing her to hear this. “While I was unconscious in the hospital. It wasn’t just a dream though – it felt real, like I was living another life entirely.”

She was quiet, waiting for me to continue.

“In this other reality, I chose differently. When Ollie’s birthday came around, I decided to celebrate Riley’s birthday with Sophia instead of being there for our son. I chose them over you both, again and again, until you couldn’t take it anymore.”

My voice broke as the memories of that terrible vision flooded back. “You and Ollie died in a car accident, Lumina. You were trying to take Ollie out to feel better because I didn’t show up for his birthday although I promised, and you both got in a car accident, and Ollie had a heart attack and I ended up losing you both forever, you died in my arms hating me. I had to live with the knowledge that I chose wrong, that my selfishness and my inability to put my family first cost me everything that mattered.”

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line, and when Lumina spoke, her voice sounded strange, like she was genuinely scared of what I had said.

“You had a dream about us… dying in a car accident?”

“Yes,” I said, confused by the odd tone in her voice. “It felt so real, so vivid. I woke up knowing that I couldn’t let that happen in reality. I’m lucky it was just a nightmare, that I still have a chance to fix this.”

The silence went on for what felt like eternity.

When Lumina finally spoke, her voice was controlled, almost sounding like a robot as she said,

“It was probably just your fear that created that dream after how we left,” she said, but something in her tone didn’t sound right. “Guilt and anxiety can create very vivid nightmares.”

Before I could question her response further, she cleared her throat and continued in a more normal voice.

“I have to go now, Xenois. Ollie needs attention, and we’ve caused enough chaos here already, and as guests I doubt we should be

causing problems for Zade any longer.”

“Wait-”

But the phone was already being passed, and suddenly Ollie’s small voice was back on the line, sounding shaky from his fall.

“Daddy? I’m sorry I fell down. The desk was really high and I didn’t think about how I was going to get down when I climbed up

there.”

“It’s okay, baby,” I said, forcing my voice to sound calm and reassuring despite the turmoil that was going on in my chest. “Are you

hurt badly?”

“Just my head hurts a little,” Ollie said, slowly although from his tone, it felt like his pride was hurt more than the fall.

“And I think I have to say sorry to Alpha Zade for sneaking into his office without asking permission first. Mommy says that’s called

trespassing and it’s not polite.”

“You’re right, you should apologize,” I agreed, my heart filled with pride at his honesty and sense of responsibility.

“But I bet Alpha Zade will understand why you did what you did. You just missed your daddy.”

“I did miss you,” Ollie said softly, sniffling.

“But Daddy, I’m worried about someone else too.”

‘Who are you worried about?”

“Riley,” Ollie said immediately. “Someone needs to take care of him while I’m gone. Can you please be there for him until I come back? I don’t like Sophia and I think she’s up to something bad.”

The mention of Riley sent a familiar wave of guilt and confusion through me, but I pushed it aside to focus on what Ollie was saying. Did Ollie know that Riley was his half brother or was that being kept a secret from him too? Would he hate me for that, when he found out that he wasn’t my only child.

“Ollie, Sophia is Riley’s mother. She takes care of him.” I said Instead forcing down my questions. There was no need to burden him with such knowledge now, especially when it might lead to resentment.

“No, Daddy,” Ollie said, his voice becoming more insistent and urgent, not happy that I was brushing off his concerns so easily.

“You have to trust me on this, okay? I know you’re confused about Riley, but something’s not right about Sophia. She’s mean to Riley when she thinks no one is looking, and she says things that make me feel scared. Please just keep an eye on them? For me?”

The genuine fear In my five-year-old son’s voice made me pause. Ollie was intuitive, more so than most children his age. If he was

genuinely concerned about Riley’s welfare…

“I promise,” I said finally. “I’ll make sure Riley is safe.”

“Thank you, Daddy,” Ollie said, relief clear in his voice as he added. “I feel better knowing you’ll watch out for him. Maybe you could have him sleep over at Uncle Thorne’s house sometimes? Just so he’s not alone with Sophia all the time?”

Before I could respond to that surprisingly mature suggestion that he had made, I heard shuffling on the other end of the line, and

then a different voice came through.

“Alpha Blackwood,” Zade’s voice sounded professionally polite, but I could hear the smugness in his tone that made my wolf snarl.

“I’m afraid we need to end this call. It was unsanctioned, and while I understand the circumstances, we can’t allow this pattern to

continue.”
