Chapter 138
XENOIS

“You take good care of my family,” I said through gritted teeth, my free hand clenched tightly, hating that I had to depend on this
man for their safety.
“Of course,” Zade replied smoothly, like he was amused about the whole thing and I hated it.
“They’re safe here, and they’ll continue to be safe for as long as they choose to stay.”
“And Zade?” I couldn’t help myself from adding, my Alpha instincts rising up with possessiveness.
“Don’t get any ideas about my mate. She’s off limits, and I trust you to remember that, and they better be staying in completely
separate areas MILES away from your room.”
There was a pause, and then Zade’s voice came through with what I could swear was amusement and a hint of mockery in his tone.
“Are you giving me ideas, Blackwood? What would you do if I decided to try it out?”
My vision went red briefly as my wolf asserted itself with rage pushing closer to the surface.
“You better think carefully about what you’re suggesting—”
“After all,” Zade continued, his voice taking on a provocating tone that I was certain was deliberate at this point “when you had Sophia as your girlfriend years ago, Lumina and I were… how should I put this… quite close. What happens if we decide to rekindle that
old flame?”
The growl that tore from my throat was purely animalistic, and I heard both Thorne and my mother take alarmed steps backward. My hand gripped the phone so tightly I was surprised it didn’t crack.
“You son of a-*
The line went dead. I slammed the phone down on my desk with enough force to make everything on the surface jump, my chest
heaving with the effort to control my wolf.
“Xenois, calm down,” Thorne said immediately, moving closer but keeping his distance in case I lashed out. “Zade is mated now. He
has a mate bond. He won’t pursue Lumina.”
I turned to stare at him, my breathing still rough and ragged as my brain tried to process what he just told me.
“Mated? To whom? How did I not know about this?”

Thorne hesitated, looking uncomfortable about the topic.
“It’s… complicated. Not many people know about it yet. The relationship is still kept under wraps because of the uniqueness of the
bond.”

“Who is his mate?” I demanded, my Alpha authority clearly bleeding into my voice.
“The person who called my private line asking for packages with your scent on clothes and toys,” Thorne said reluctantly. “While you
were unconscious. They wanted comfort items for Ollie.”
I stared at him, processing this information. Someone had called on behalf of my son while I was hospitalized, someone who cared enough about Ollie’s wellbeing to ensure he had familiar scents to comfort him. Someone who was now apparently Zade’s mate.
“Who-”
“Xenois,” my mother interrupted, her voice cutting through my questions, making me remember that she was still here, despite the
fact that I told her to leave.
She’d been silent during the phone call, but now she stepped forward with determination and something else present across her face.
–
“You need to forget about Lumina and focus on what’s best for this pack. That phone call just proved my point she’s under another Alpha’s protection now, and he’s already making territorial claims on a woman that doesn’t belong to him.”
“Mother, I swear to the Moon Goddess-”
“Listen to me,” she continued, ignoring my warning tone.
“Sophia has been here, taking care of Riley, supporting you through this crisis. She’s the mother of your child, and she’s been nothing but loyal and supportive and patient while you chase after this Lumina who had done nothing but brought a headache since she came here. Meanwhile, Lumina abandons you and runs straight to your old rival.”
“Lumina left because of the toxic environment you helped create, because you refused to believe she was innocent even right from the
moment Xena died.
* I snarled, turning to face her fully. “And she didn’t run to Zade she ran to safety for our son.”
–
“She ran to another man,” Mother shot back. “A man who clearly still has feelings for her, based on what you just heard on the phone. How long before those old feelings resurface? How long before she gives in to the temptation and cheat on you?
Her words hit deeper than I wanted to admit, stirring up insecurities I’d been trying to ignore.
The confidence in Zade’s voice when he mentioned their past, the way he’d deliberately goaded me about rekindling old flames…
“That’s enough,” I said, but my voice lacked its earlier confidence.

Is it?’ Mother pressed, not backing down from her justified righteous rant.

“Because from where I’m standing, it looks like you’re about to lose everything while chasing after a woman who’s already moved on. Riley needs a father, Xenois. The pack needs a Luna. Sophia could give you both.”
“Sophia is not my mate,” I said firmly, trying to hold onto what I knew was right despite the doubts my mother was sowing.
“Mate bonds can be broken,” Mother replied coldly, not batting an eyelid.
“And sometimes what we think we want isn’t what’s best for everyone involved.”
I looked between her and Thorne, seeing concern in both their faces, though for different reasons. Thorne was worried about my wellbeing and the stability of the pack. My mother was worried about her vision of what our family should look like.
But all I could think about was Ollie’s voice on the phone, the joy and love and desperate longing to come home. All I could think about was Lumina’s exhausted tone when she mentioned mate rejection, as if she was already giving up on us.
And underneath it all, the nagging certainty that Ollie was right about Riley needing protection, that there were pieces of this puzzle
I still wasn’t seeing clearly.
“I need time to think,” I said finally, sinking back into my chair. “Everyone out. I need to be alone.”
Thorne nodded and moved toward the door, but my mother lingered.
“Don’t take too long, Xenois,” she said quietly. “Some opportunities don’t come around twice. And some people don’t wait forever.”
After they left, I sat in the silence of my office, staring at the phone that had just connected me to the most important voices in my
world. Lumina and Ollie.
And underlying it all, Zade’s smug confidence and the implication that he had more claim to my family than I did.
I picked up the phone and dialed Thorne’s extension.
‘I want you to clear my schedule that I have from 8pm, shift it to the next day. I am going home to see Riley tonight”
I said when he answered. “And I want a full background check on everyone who’s been in contact with him and Sophia since they
arrived here.”
“Xenois-”
“My son asked me to protect Riley,” I cut him off. “And if Ollie is worried enough to specifically mention it, then I’m going to take it seriously. There’s something I’m missing here, something important. And I’m going to find out what it is.”
