Chapter 145

SOPHIA

Riley didn’t resist or cry out when I pulled him with a grip that would leave normal bones broken, which only helped to fuel my anger

further.

The compulsion spell was still working perfectly well, he couldn’t disobey me directly, he couldn’t fight back or run away.

But somehow, he’d found a way to work around it, to strike at the spot where I was most vulnerable.

In his room, I checked his necklace first, running my hand along the chain to make sure it was still well fastened and locked around

his neck. The pendant was a bit warm against his skin, the magic was still humming with power.

Whatever loophole he’d found to remove Xenois’s necklace without me knowing, he hadn’t been able to use it on his own.

“Did you think this was going to change anything?” I asked him as I aggressively pulled out clothes from his dresser, throwing

together an outfit that was suitable for our trip to the woods.

“Did you think being a little hero would somehow save you?”

Riley stood quietly as I dressed him, his compliance perfect as he was emotionless as always when the necklace’s magic was at work.

“Let me remind you of something,” I continued, my voice dropping to a venomous whisper as I pulled a sweater over his head.

“You’re not innocent in this, Riley. You’re as much a villain as I am.”

I gripped his shoulders, forcing him to look at me, which he did as I continued speaking.

“You made Xenois spend all that time with you instead of with Ollie for months, Ollie probably resented you secretly for that and as well as Lumina. You shook Ollie’s hand at your first playdate to siphon his power, didn’t you? You’re the reason Lumina felt threatened enough to leave with her son.”

I could see the pain that passed across his face at my words, but aside from that, he kept his eyes on me, saying nothing.

“One missing necklace doesn’t absolve you of your crimes,” I added coldly, gripping him tight as I continued speaking with fury.

“It doesn’t make you the hero of this story. You’re still the little boy who helped destroy a family, even if you didn’t understand what you were doing at the time.”

Riley’s eyes filled with tears, but he didn’t speak one word. The compulsion spell wouldn’t let him argue with me or defend himself when I spoke like this.

Chapter 145

“Now come on,” I said, grabbing my car keys from the dresser where I’d left them the night before. “We have somewhere important to

I dragged him down the stairs and out to my car, the morning sunlight lighting the path, feeling cheerful in a way that felt like it was

mocking me as we stepped outside.

I dragged Riley to the car and buckled him into the passenger seat with more force than necessary, my hands shaking slightly with

anticipation and rage.

As I started the engine and pulled out of the driveway, I caught sight of Riley’s face in the rearview mirror. He was staring out the window with an expression that was far too mature for a five-year-old – resigned acceptance mixed with a kind of peace that made my

skin crawl.

He knew what was coming. Somehow, this child had figured out exactly what I was planning, and instead of being terrified, he

seemed almost… relieved.

“You think you’re so smart, don’t you?” I said as we drove through the quiet suburban streets toward the edge of town. “You think you’ve won some kind of victory by freeing Xenois from my influence.”

Riley didn’t respond, just continued staring out the window with that infuriating calm.

“But here’s what’s going to happen,” I continued, my voice getting harsher with each word.

“When you don’t come home tonight, Xenois is going to be devastated. He’s going to blame himself for not protecting you. And who do you think will be there to comfort him in his grief?”
