Chapter 146

I smiled at the thought, feeling some of my rage transform into anticipation and excitement for tonight act. He was going to be so

devastated that he would drink, which would lead to him getting drugged and drunk and I’ll be there for him comforting him with my

body.

“I’ll be the grieving mother who lost her precious son. The woman who needs his strength and support to get through this tragedy.

And in his guilt and sorrow, he’ll cling to me like a lifeline.”

We reached the outskirts of town, and I turned onto the winding road that led deep into the forest. The trees grew thicker as we

drove, their branches forming a canopy that blocked out more and more of the morning sun.

“Lumina and Ollie will come back for your funeral, of course, I mused, enjoying the way Riley flinched at the mention of his real family. “But by then, Xenois and I will be united in our grief. He will see that I was the one for him who stood by his side while everyone left him. They’ll see that we belong together, that we’ve found comfort in each other during our darkest hour.”

For a moment, I felt something crack inside my chest – something that might have been guilt or regret or the last remnant of whatever humanity I’d possessed before my obsession with Xenois had consumed everything else.

But then I thought about Lumina’s face when she’d stood in front of him on the night of their mating ceremony when I had snuck in, a last visit to convince Xenois to pick me instead six years ago, the way he’d looked at her with such love and devotion.

I thought about Ollie calling him Daddy with such complete trust and adoration. I thought about all the years I’d waited, all the
