Chapter 153
XENOIS
The drive to the forest felt like it took hours, though I knew it had only been twenty minutes since Riley’s terrified call had cut off
abruptly.
It has been the worst twenty minutes of my life.
Twenty minutes of my mind going through every possible scenario, each one worse than the last.
Thorne sat in the passenger seat beside me, planning and coordinating with the other vehicles that were behind us.
We had gathered a convoy of our pack’s best warriors, all were well armed to their teeth and ready for whatever we might find.
“The GPS shows Sophia’s phone signal went dead about three miles into the Blackwood Forest,”

Thorne said, his voice hoarse from the same tension that I was feeling. He may not have liked Sophia much but he was worried about
Riley and has accepted him as my own even before I had, and he had come to care for him the same way he did for Ollie.
“If they’re still there, we should be able to track them by scent once we get close.”
I pressed harder on the accelerator, hearing this from him, pushing my truck to its limits on the winding forest road.
Behind us, I could see the headlights of five other vehicles, each carrying warriors who’d dropped everything the moment they’d heard
that rogues were threatening a pack member – especially a child.
“Alpha,” came Marcus’s voice through the radio,
“we’ve got visual on a vehicle ahead. The engine’s still running and there is no one around, driver’s door open.
My heart nearly stopped when I heard this. That had to be Sophia’s car. I could see it now through the trees.
It was a silver sedan that had been parked at an odd angle in a small clearing, its door hanging open like whoever had been driving
had left in a hurry.
I brought my truck to a halt and was out of the vehicle before it had fully stopped moving.
The scent hit me immediately multiple rogues, at least six or seven different individuals, their smell sharp and foul in the forest air.
–
But underneath that, I could detect traces of Sophia’s floral perfume and something else… something that made my wolf pace
frantically in my chest.

Chapter 153
…
Riley’s scent. Faint, but definitely there.
:
“Riley!” I shouted, my voice echoing through the trees. “Riley, can you hear me?”
Only silence answered back and it was broken by the sound of my warriors who were moving, spreading themselves out in the clearing, beginning their search for them.
Thorne showed at my side, his expression grim and worried as he took in the scene.

“Look at this,” he said, pointing to the ground around Sophia’s car, as I followed his hand.
The earth was disturbed, showing clear signs of a struggle. Footprints in the soft mud and soil told a story about multiple attackers.
“Sophia!” I called out, moving deeper into the forest. “Sophia, where are you?”
The scent trail led away from the car, moving through the trees in what seemed like a random pattern.
It wasn’t straight, but randomly like someone was running random, fear making the person not to think straight or have a specific
escape plan in mind.
My wolf was going crazy, every instinct screaming at me to shift and track them down, but I forced myself to stay human. I needed to be able to communicate with my team, and needed to coordinate our search efforts.
“Over here!” Marcus’s voice came loud and clear from about fifty yards to our left. “I found something!”
Thorne and I made our way quickly through the undergrowth toward the sound of his voice, branches breaking against our clothes
and scratching our faces.
Marcus was kneeling beside a fallen log, holding up what looked like a piece of torn fabric.
“It’s from Riley’s shirt,” I said immediately, recognizing the blue material with its small superhero print on it.
“The one he was wearing this morning.”
The sight of it, concrete evidence that my son had been here, had been dragged through these woods by rogues nearly brought me
to my knees.
But I forced myself to stay focused, to channel my terror into action.
‘Which direction?” I asked Marcus.
He pointed deeper into the forest, towards a path that led towards a cliff.
“The scent trail leads that way, but it’s getting fainter. They must have been moving fast.”

Chapter 153
We followed the trail for what felt like hours, calling Riley’s and Sophia’s names until our voices were hoarse.
The scent grew weaker with each passing minute, as it seemed to be getting fainter in the evening air until it was almost impossible to pick up.
That’s when we heard it, a low moan coming behind some bushes near a small stream.
“Sophia!” I shouted, rushing toward the sound. Throne followed me, as well anxious to get to them. If Sophia was there. That meant Riley was too.
When we got there, what I saw froze me to the spot.
She was lying on her side in a bed of fallen leaves, her clothes torn and dirty, a cut across her forehead that was stained with blood. She looked so pale and was barely breathing from where I could see her.
Her eyes were closed, and for a terrifying moment I thought she might be dead.
“Sophia, can you hear me?” I asked, panic in my voice as I dropped to my knees beside her and gently shaking her shoulder.
Her eyes slowly open, unfocused and confused. She looked around wildly for a moment, as if she didn’t recognize where she was or
who I was.
“Xenois?” she whispered, her voice weak and disoriented.
“I’m here,” I said, relief flooding through me at seeing her alive. “You’re safe now. We found you.”
But even as I said it, I was looking around desperately for any sign of Riley. The boy was nowhere to be seen, and Sophia was alone.
“Riley,” she said suddenly, trying to sit up too quickly and wincing at the movement. “Where’s Riley? Is he with you?”
