Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 155

Chapter 155

LUMINA

68

The fluorescent lights in the hospital hallway cast everything in a harsh, sterile glow that made my skin look pale and sickly. I’d been pacing this floor for hours now, my footsteps echoing off the walls in a rhythm that matched the frantic beating of my heart.

Every few minutes I’d stop and stare through the small window in the door to Ollie’s room, hoping to see some change, some sign

that my son was getting better instead of worse.

But each time I looked, he appeared smaller and more fragile in that hospital bed, surrounded by machines that beeped and hummed

with constant rhythm.

The doctors had done everything they could, but they’d been honest about his chances

injuries.

Injuries that made no sense. Injuries that shouldn’t have been possible.

survival was unlikely given the extent of his

hall.

“Lumina, you need to sit down,” Lyn said gently, appearing at my side with two cups of coffee from the vending machine down the

beds.

“You’ve been pacing for hours. You’re going to collapse if you don’t rest.”

I accepted the coffee gratefully, wrapping my hands around the warm cup and inhaling the bitter steam.

“I can’t sit still,” I said, my voice hoarse from crying. “Every time I close my eyes, I see him falling. I hear that scream.”

The memory was burned into my mind

Ollie playing happily in Zade’s garden, laughing as he chased a butterfly through the flower

One moment he’d been running around with the boundless energy that only five-year-olds possessed, and the next he’d been screaming in agony and collapsing to the ground as If he’d been struck by an invisible force.

The blood had come immediately – flowing from wounds that appeared out of nowhere, soaking through his clothes as I’d knelt beside him and tried to understand what was happening.

His left arm had been bent at an unnatural angle, and when the paramedics had arrived, they’d found multiple fractures throughout

his small body.

“The doctors said he has broken ribs, a fractured skull, internal bleeding,” I whispered, taking a sip of coffee that tasted like ash in my

mouth.

“But he was just playing on level ground. He didn’t fall from anywhere high enough to cause that kind of damage.”

Lyn nodded, his expression troubled. “I’ve been thinking about that too. It doesn’t make medical sense.”

That’s when Lynn came hurrying down the hallway toward us, clutching a tablet in her hands and looking more upset than I’d seen

her since this whole nightmare had started.

As Zade’s mate and the pack’s Luna, she usually maintained an aura of calm authority, but right now she looked as frightened and

confused as I felt.

“I got the security footage from the garden cameras,” she said breathlessly, holding up the tablet. “You need to see this.”

I set down my coffee and took the tablet from her hands, Lyn leaning over my shoulder to watch as Lynn pressed play. The footage

showed Ollie exactly as I remembered running through the garden, chasing the butterfly, completely carefree and happy.

Then, without warning, his expression changed. His face contorted in sudden terror, and he let out a scream that I could hear clearly

through the tablet’s speakers even though there was no sound from the video feed.

He fell backward as If he’d been pushed by invisible hands, his small body hitting the ground hard. But that was impossible – there had been nothing there to push him, nothing that could have caused him to fall like that.

“Play it again,” I said, my hands shaking as I held the tablet.

We watched it three more times, and each viewing only made the situation more strange and unable to understand. Ollie had been

alone in the garden.

There were no other children, no adults, no animals – nothing that could have caused him to suddenly scream and fall as if he’d been

injured by some external force.

“Where are the broken bones coming from?” I whispered, looking between Lynn and Lyn with desperation. ‘He was on level ground. He just collapsed. So how does he have injuries consistent with falling from a great height?”

Neither of them had an answer. We stood there in the hallway, staring at the frozen image of my son’s terrified face on the tablet screen, trying to make sense of something that defied all logic.

That’s when I heard the sound of heavy footsteps approaching, and I looked up to see Zade striding down the hallway toward us. His expression was thunderous, and I could practically feel the anger radiating from him even from a distance.

“Any news?” he asked curtly when he reached us, though his eyes were focused on Lynn rather than me.

“No change,” Lynn replied softly. “The doctors are doing everything they can, but…”

She didn’t need to finish the sentence. We all knew how dire the situation was.

“I tried calling Xenois,” Zade said, his voice tight with barely controlled fury. “Wanted to let him know what was happening to his son.

But the call went to his PA Instead.”

bed.

My heart jumped at the mention of Xenois. “What did she say?’

“She said Xenois had taken time off to spend with Riley,” Zade replied, and the contempt in his voice was unmistakable.

“Apparently he’s too busy playing happy family with his new son to be bothered about the child who’s actually dying in a hospital

The words hit me like a physical blow. “That’s not… he wouldn’t…”

But even as I started to defend Xenois, doubt crept into my mind. I remembered our last conversation, the way he’d seemed confused and distant, the way he’d talked about Riley as if the boy was more important to him than his own flesh and blood.

“He’s choosing Riley again,” Zade continued, his anger building with each word. “Just like he always does. His real son is fighting for his life, and where is he? Off somewhere with the child who’s been nothing but trouble since the day he arrived.”

“Wait,” I said suddenly, remembering something. “When I called Xenois earlier, he said something about Riley being attacked by

rogues. He seemed panicked about it.”

Lyn straightened up, his expression becoming more alert. “Two children attacked at the same time?” he said thoughtfully. “That’s not normal. There has to be an underlying factor here, some connection we’re not seeing.”

He paused, then looked directly at me with an intensity that made me uncomfortable. “Maybe this isn’t a normal problem. Maybe it’s

a magical one.”
