Chapter 156
LUMINA
The suggestion hung in the air between us like a challenge, nobody wanted to accept. I felt my heart skip a beat hearing this. I remembered that I had used Carol, my friend to perform a protective spell on Ollie to prevent any magical siphon from occurring but I
never did tell anyone that.

I had committed a crime and it was punishable by death. Magic wasn’t something werewolves typically dealt with.
Our world was one of physical strength, pack bonds, and natural instincts, that always seemed to be dominant and well valued in our
world.
But Lyn’s words made a terrible kind of sense when I thought about the inexplicable nature of Ollie’s injuries. This had to be a magical case. But how? Sophia wasn’t here. Ollie was protected, we left. How did he get to this critical condition again?
“No,” Zade said immediately, his voice filled with authority, pulling me from my thoughts as I looked at him.
He was furious and not even considering it as an option. He shook his head and continued speaking.
“We’re not going down that road. Witches are forbidden from working in werewolf business. They’re not allowed to interfere with our affairs.” He shot it down immediately just like I knew he would. Even Xenois shot this down in my past life when I had told him about Sophia using a magical siphon on Ollie which was the reason for his sickness.
“But if something magical is happening to these children-” Lyn started to argue, not put down by the no. Rather he seemed more invigorated with actually insisting on this type of treatment.
“Then we’ll handle it ourselves,” Zade cut him off. “We don’t need outside help, especially not from practitioners of dark arts.”
“I have to do something at the very least,” Lyn pressed, stepping closer to Zade with a determination I’d never seen from him before. Lyn wasn’t one who conversed with Zade, from the time I have spent here. This had to be the longest conversation they have ever had in front of me, usually Lynn was the one who was stubborn and went toe to toe with her mate on things that they never agreed on.
“If there’s even a chance that magic is involved, we need to explore every option. Ollie’s life is at stake.”
Zade’s expression darkened, and suddenly he reached out and grabbed Lyn by the arm, his grip tight enough to make the other man
wince.
“I should have my mate committing crimes that might lead to his death?” Zade snarled, his voice low and dangerous.
The words stopped me cold. I stared at them, my mind struggling to process what I’d just heard.
His mate?

Lyn jerked his arm free from Zade’s grip, his own anger flaring, as he looked furious at Zade. “It’s preferable, after all, since you still
have feelings for Lumina.”
The accusation hit the air like a thunderclap, and suddenly the tension between them became clear to me.
This wasn’t just a disagreement about inviting witches for help on a case that was overwhelming us- this was something much deeper
and more personal.
“Stop it!” Lynn’s voice cut through their argument, as both men turned to look at her.
“Both of you, stop this right now! This isn’t the time or place for your personal drama. Lumina doesn’t need this.”
mate
I stood there in shock, trying to piece together what I’d just learned. Zade and Lyn were mates? But Lynn was supposed to be Zade’s
everyone in the pack treated her like a Luna, called her by that title, deferred to her as if she were the Alpha’s chosen partner.
—
“I don’t understand,” I said quietly, looking between the three of them.
“Lynn, I thought you were Zade’s mate. Everyone treats you like you are.”
Lynn looked uncomfortable, glancing between her brother and Zade before sighing heavily.
“That’s… complicated,” she said. “I’m Lyn’s twin sister. When Zade and Lyn mated, after finding out that it was indeed Lyn, that was
his mate and not me, it was decided that it would be easier for pack dynamics if I acted as a public Luna figure while Lyn remained more
behind the scenes.”
The revelation hit me like an avalanche. All this time, I’d been assuming that Lynn was Zade’s romantic partner, that the kindness
and attention he’d shown me was just a friendly concern for a pack guest.
But if Lyn was actually his mate…
“Lyn,” I said slowly, pieces of the puzzle starting to come together in my mind.
‘You’re the one who’s been breaking Zade’s rules to make Ollie happy. You called Thorne to arrange for packages from home. You’ve
been going out of your way to help us settle in here.”
Lyn nodded, his expression softening as he looked at me. “I wanted you both to be comfortable. And I could see how much Ollie was missing his father.”
“But you’re also…” I trailed off, remembering Zade’s angry words about crimes that could lead to death.
“A were witch,” Lyn finished quietly. “Or someone who practices witchcraft, anyway. Which is forbidden in werewolf society and typically punishable by death if discovered.”
The admission hung in the air between us, heavy with implications. Zade was mated to someone whose very existence was considered

illegal by werewall law. No wonder they’d chosen to keep their relationship secret, to let Lynn act as a public figurehead while Lyn
remained in the shadows.
them
And you think magic might be involved in what’s happening to Ollie and Riley?’ I asked, my voice low enough to be barely heard by
Lyn nodded. “The timing, the inexplicable nature of the injuries, the fact that it’s happening to both children, both under attacks by
something we aren’t sure of it all points to supernatural issues.”
I looked at Zade, seeing the conflict written clearly across his face. His mate was offering to use forbidden magic to potentially save
my son’s life, but doing so would put Lyn at tremendous risk.
“If you’re caught…” I said quietly,
“Then I’m caught,” Lyn replied with a shrug. “But if I don’t try and that little boy dies when I might have been able to help him, I’ll
never forgive myself.”
The machines in Ollie’s room chose that moment to start beeping more frantically, and through the window I could see nurses
rushing into his room. My heart stopped as I watched them work over his small body, their movements urgent and desperate.
Time was running out. Whatever was happening to my son, whatever connection existed between his condition and Riley’s situation,
we needed answers soon.
