Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 159

Chapter 159

OLLIE

68

I was in so much pain that I couldn’t think straight, couldn’t understand where I was or what was happening to me. Everything hurt –

my head, my chest, my arms and legs like someone had taken me apart and put me back together wrong. The darkness around me was complete, thick and heavy like being wrapped in a blanket that was too tight, and I couldn’t see anything no matter how hard I tried to

open my eyes.

I couldn’t find Mama anywhere, and that scared me more than the pain did. Mama was always there when I needed her, always ready with hugs and kisses and soft words that made everything better. But now I was alone in this strange dark place, and every time I tried to

call for her, my voice came out weak and shaky.

I tried to move, to sit up or roll over or do something to make the pain stop, but that just made everything hurt worse. A sob escaped from my throat as I shifted my body, trying to find a position that didn’t feel like someone was stabbing me with knives.

“If you don’t move, it won’t hurt as much,” a familiar voice said softly from somewhere nearby.

I recognized that voice immediately, even though it sounded different somehow – sadder and more tired than I remembered. “Riley?” I whispered, reaching out with my hand until I felt his fingers touch mine.

Riley’s hand was cold, much colder than it should have been, but he held mine gently and pulled me carefully into his arms. He was being so careful not to hurt me more, moving slowly and making soft shushing sounds like Mama did when I had nightmares.

“It’s okay, Ollie,” he whispered, his voice right next to my ear. “It won’t hurt as much if you stay still. I promise.”

I wanted to ask him so many questions, but the most important one came out first. “What are you doing here? Where are we? Did you come to Alpha Zade’s territory? Did Daddy come with you to take me and Mama home too?”

Riley was quiet for a long moment, and I could feel him taking deep breaths like he was trying not to cry. “We’re in the in-between,” he said finally, his voice so soft I almost couldn’t hear him.

“The kind voice told me about it before. I saw that you were here, and I wanted to talk to you before I have to go away forever.”

‘Forever?” The word scared me more than the darkness or the pain. “What do you mean forever, Riley?”

‘I can’t really explain it,” he said, and I heard him cough like he was sick. But I found you here and I wanted to see you one more

time.”

That’s when I noticed something glowing near Riley’s neck, a soft blue light that was the only thing I could see in all this darkness. I reached toward it carefully, and my fingers touched what felt like a necklace with a smooth stone hanging from it. I remembered this necklace. This was what caused the school accident that made Riley head hurt after he protected me from not hitting the stairs myself.

“Riley, your necklace is glowing again” I said, touching the glowing stone.
