Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 158

Chapter 158

THORNE

。(68)

“Lumina, who was a prime suspect of killing your sister but married anyway? Or Sophia, your ex-lover who conveniently had Riley at a time when you have no memory of sleeping with her?” Xenois looked at me, his eyes widened in shock at the question.

The question was brutal, but I needed to hear his answer without the influence of whatever had been clouding his judgment. This seemed like the perfect time to get the answer from him.

“Lumina,” he said without hesitation, despite the confusion about why I would ask him such a question.

“It’s always been Lumina. I don’t know why I’ve been so confused about that lately, but seeing Ollie in danger made everything clear

again.”

That was it. That was the confirmation I needed.

I cursed under my breath and started running toward the hospital exit, my mind racing as pieces of the puzzle fell into place. This was a mystery that was slowly unravelling itself after all this years and I still could not believe it.

“Thorne, where are you going?” Xenois called after me.

“Stay here with Sophia,” I shouted back without stopping, eager to get to my destination quickly.

“Keep an eye on her. Don’t let her out of your sight.”

I didn’t wait for his response. I had to get back to those woods, and had to confirm what I was starting to suspect.

The drive back to Blackwood Forest felt like it took hours, though I knew I was pushing my truck to dangerous speeds on the winding

roads.

My mind kept returning to one crucial detail – the necklace that had gone missing from around Xenois’s neck.

For years, I’d asked Xenois who he loved more, Lumina or Sophia, and he’d never been able to give me a straight answer.

He seemed genuinely torn, conflicted in ways that had never made sense given his history with both women.

But now, with the necklace gone and his head suddenly clear, he’d answered without hesitation.

Xenois insisted that Lumina had given him that necklace, but I knew better. Even before Lumina gave birth to her son, that necklace

had been on Xenois neck..

For six whole years that necklace had never been taken off and Xenois was never able to commit to just one woman. I had assumed

that Xenois didn’t love Lumina but since it was an arranged marriage, he had no choice which was why I closed a blind eye whenever he

talked to Sophia, on the phone who was in another pack then.

What if the necklace had been influencing his emotions, clouding his judgment, making him feel things that weren’t real? Making him

submissive to Sophia’s antics. Things were starting to make sense now. Sophia kissing Xenois in front of Ollie’s school, the confusion he

felt back then like he was in a trance. I hadn’t noticed it then because I was so furious with him actually cheating with Sophia.

That necklace was the underlying factor here. And if Riley had somehow managed to remove it, if the boy had freed his father from

whatever spell Sophia had cast…

Riley would have paid the price for that act of defiance. Sophia would never let that lie low, even if Riley was their son.

I reached the forest and abandoned my truck at the roadside, shifting into my wolf form and howling my location to the night sky.

My enhanced senses immediately picked up the scent trails we’d followed earlier, but this time I was looking for something specific.

I followed the path deeper into the woods, past the clearing where we’d found Sophia, toward the cliff that overlooked the stream

below.

The moon was full overhead, casting everything in silver light that made the shadows seem scarier than usual and more threatening.

When I reached the cliff edge, I looked down into the darkness below and saw something that made my heart stop.

A small form lying motionless on the rocks beside the stream, pale and still in the moonlight.

Riley.

I found another path that led down to the stream bed, shifting back to human form as I ran, branches tearing at my clothes and rocks cutting my feet. I had to get to him, and had to see if there was any chance….

But as I got closer, I could see that the boy’s eyes were wide open, staring sightlessly at the stars above. His small body was broken and twisted, his clothes soaked with water and blood.

Tears blurred my vision as I reached out toward him, grief and rage warring in my chest. This innocent child, who had done nothing wrong except exist as an obstacle to Sophia’s twisted plans.

“Do not take another step near the boy.”

The voice came from behind me, cold and commanding. I spun around to see a figure emerging from the shadows dark hair and eyes that glowed with unnatural light. The scent that hit me was unmistakably magical, the sharp ozone smell of witchcraft.

A witch. In werewolf territory. My wolf snarled with instinctive hatred.

“You dare use his dead body for rituals? I snarled, lunging forward and catching her by the throat. My hands tightened around her

neck, ready to squeeze the life out of her for desecrating Riley’s corpse.

I’m the only thing keeping him alive,” she managed to croak out, her fingers clawing at my hands.

I loosened my grip slightly, confused. “What?”

“Look around you,” she gasped. “Really look.”

I glanced around the stream bed and noticed for the first time the protective circle that had been drawn around Riley’s body, the

herbs and crystals arranged in careful patterns, the candles that burned with flames that never flickered despite the night breeze.

“He’s not dead,” the witch continued, rubbing her throat as I released her completely. “But he’s close. Someone used very powerful

magic to try to kill him, magic that’s still working to drain his life away. I’m holding it back, but I can’t do it much longer.”

“Who are you?” I demanded.

“My name is Carol,” she said. “And if you want to save this boy’s life, you need to listen to me very carefully.”
