Chapter 161
LYN
Was I crazy? Yes….yes I was but I was determined to see this through no matter what.
I watched Zade’s face change to anger and confusion as Lynn, came back moments later and handed me the bag of herbs and potions, her movements were quick and efficient despite the tension that was building up between us.
The familiar weight of my bag which contained my supplies in my hands felt both comforting and terrifying – I hadn’t used my abilities for anything this serious in years, not since I’d promised Zade I would keep that part of myself hidden, to try and fit in the
narrative he has created for me.
The irony wasn’t lost on me that here I was, about to break that promise to try and save the life of a child who I had begun to see as mine and also someone who had never liked Zade, in front of a mate who was already questioning whether he’d made the right choice in
accepting me.
“Everyone out,” Zade commanded, his Alpha voice echoing through the hospital room, filled with enough compulsion to make the humans and weaker wolves leave the room. The doctors and nurses looked confused at the sudden command, but didn’t dare question him, filing out quickly while casting worried glances back at Ollie’s still body on the bed.
I turned to Lynn, who was hanging around near Lumina with obvious reluctance to leave, me alone in this room.
“Take her out of here,” I said firmly, knowing it was for the best and there was no need for her to see this. “She doesn’t need to see
this part.
Lumina stepped forward, her maternal instincts taking over any fear that she might have had about what I was planning to do, she was someone whose look screamed that she wasn’t going anywhere without her son and you would have to kill her to remove her from
here.
She was feisty, I could see why Zade liked her and why Xenois was not willing to let her go. She was everything I wasn’t.
“I’m staying with my son,’ she said, her voice steady despite the tears streaming down her face, making no attempt to clean them.
I shook my head at her words while at the same time pulling ingredients from the bag and beginning to arrange them around Ollie’s bed, as they were vital for what I was about to do.
‘I understand you want to be here, but what I’m about to do is dangerous. I need to drain the life force of whatever magical entity is holding onto Ollie’s energy, and hopefully that person on the other end is Sophia. But if any of you stay in this room during the ritual, I might end up accidentally killing you as well.”
The admission hung heavy in the air. This wasn’t just about breaking some supernatural connection this was about severing a magical link that could very well kill whoever was on the other end of it.

If my suspicions were correct and Sophia was using some kind of life-draining spell on Ollie, then breaking that connection forcefully could send all that stolen energy back to her in a fatal surge. That was sure to kill her, and frankly she deserves it for what she was doing. stealing a little child energy for nefarious purposes.
Lumina’s face paled when she heard this, but she didn’t back down. “He’s my son. I won’t leave him.”
I stopped arranging herbs and looked at her directly, letting her see the seriousness in my eyes. This wasn’t her neglecting her child. This was her knowing that stepping back down was the best solution for her child and nobody was going to make her feel less about it.
“Lumina, I’ve been practicing witchcraft since I was a teenager. I know what I’m doing, but I also know how unpredictable magic can be when you’re dealing with life force manipulation. The energy I’m going to release could lash out at anyone in this room. I need you to trust me and let me work.”
Zade moved to stand beside her, his hand gentle on her shoulder despite the anger I could still see simmering in his expression. “He’s right,” he said quietly. “This is too dangerous.”
Lynn nodded and took Lumina’s arm, guiding her toward the door as she added. “We’ll be right outside,” she promised. “If anything changes, if you need us, just call.”
As they left, I felt the weight of Zade’s stare on my back. When the door closed, leaving us alone with Ollie’s unconscious form, he spoke.
“You promised me,” he said, his voice low and hurt. “When I accepted our mate bond, when I agreed to let Lynn act as my public Luna so we could keep your secret, you promised you wouldn’t practice witchcraft anymore.”
I continued setting up the ritual circle, my hands steady even though my heart was breaking. “I know what I promised.”
“Then why are you asking me to choose between keeping you safe and saving this child? You know I can’t let Ollie die, not when
there might be something we can do to help him.”
I paused in my preparations and turned to face him fully. The pain in his eyes was almost too much to bear, but I needed him to
understand. “I’m not asking you to choose anything, Zade. I know exactly where I stand in your list of priorities.”
His jaw tightened. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means I know that Lynn ranks higher than me in your affections,” I said simply, the words tasting bitter in my mouth. It means I know that even if you accepted our mate bond, part of you wishes it had been her instead of me. She’s easier to love, easier to be with. She doesn’t come with the complications that I do.”
Zade’s hand shot out and grabbed me by the throat, his grip tight enough to make breathing difficult. His eyes flashed with Alpha authority as he leaned in close. “How dare you make that insinuation,” he growled.
