Chapter 162
LYN
I met his eyes steadily, not flinching away from his anger as I knew I had to take a stand.

“Then prove me wrong,” I said, my voice strained but clear, this was something that I wasn’t going to budge on, irrespective of my
personal feelings on the matter.
“Empty this hallway and this room of doctors so I can save Ollie’s life. Show me that you’re willing to risk everything for the right
reasons, not just because you’re trying to prove something to yourself or to Lumina.”
For a moment, I thought he might actually crush my windpipe, his hand got a little bit tighter that I had the fear for a moment. The rational part of my mind catalogued how easy it would be for him to kill me right now, how no one would question an Alpha defending
his territory against a witch.
But I also knew Zade better than that. Underneath all his anger and confusion, he was a good man who wouldn’t let a child die if there was something he could do to prevent it. Not even when it meant getting rid of Ollie meant that he could get closer to Lumina and
not have Xenois little supporter stopping him at every point.
He released me abruptly, running both hands through his hair in frustration.
“This isn’t about proving anything,” he said. “This is about doing what’s right.” He insisted, trying to put up a stand at this. He was
trying to get me to see his point of view.
“I know,” I said softly, rubbing my throat where his fingers had left marks. I knew he was worried about the recuppersion of the law
and what I would suffer when I broke it.
“That’s why I’m willing to break my promise to you. Because sometimes doing what’s right means accepting the consequences of our
choices.”
I turned back to the ritual preparations, pulling out bundles of sage, protective crystals, and a small silver knife that had been blessed under three full moons. The familiar motions of setting up a magical working calmed my nerves, even as I could feel Zade watching my
every move.
“Will this kill you?” he asked quietly.
I considered lying to him, but we’d had enough deception between us already.
“It might. Life force magic is unpredictable, especially when you’re trying to sever a connection that’s been established through powerful spells. If Sophia has been draining Ollie’s energy for months, and if she’s used him as an anchor to sustain herself, then cutting that connection could send a massive surge of energy back through the link.”
“And if you’re caught in that surge?”

“Then I die, I said simply, shrugging my shoulders, trying to put a nonchalant vibe out there. “But Ollie lives, and that’s what matters
I began lighting candles around the bed, speaking words in the old language that most werewolves had forgotten. The air in the room
immediately felt different, charged with potential energy that made the hair on my arms stand up.
Zade was quiet for a long moment, and when he spoke again, his voice was softer than it had been all day.
“You need to leave now. I don’t want you in here anymore that I want Lumina or my sister. Trust me, I don’t plan on killing the Alpha of this pack, despite the shitty way that he has been treating me.” I said it, chuckling a bit to hide my nervousness from him.
He didn’t say anything for a moment, and he didn’t move from where he was. Was he planning to stay and make sure that I don’t kill
Ollie.
Wow, rude of him.
“I don’t love Lynn more than you.”
I paused in my chanting, surprised by the admission, that I thought that I was dreaming.
“Zade…”
“I’m attracted to her because she’s safe,” he continued. “She represents everything I thought I wanted in a mate – feminine, nurturing,
easy to understand. But that’s not love. That’s just… familiarity.”
I felt something tight in my chest begin to loosen. “Then why do you pull away from me? Why do you make me feel like I’m fighting for scraps of your attention?”
“Because loving you scares me,” he said honestly. “Loving you means accepting parts of myself I never thought I’d have to face. It means risking everything I’ve built here for something I don’t fully understand.”
The candles flared higher as my emotions affected the magic building in the room. I had to focus, had to channel all of this energy into saving Ollie, but Zade’s words were threatening to undo years of carefully maintained emotional distance. Was he really that bad at picking a reasonable time to communicate such personal feelings.
“And now you’re asking me to risk losing you entirely,” he added.
I picked up the silver knife, feeling its weight in my hand. “I’m not asking you for anything, Zade. I’m telling you what I’m going to
The machines monitoring Ollie’s vital signs began beeping more urgently, and I could see his small chest struggling to rise and fall. Whatever magical force was draining him was getting stronger, pulling him closer to death with each passing moment.
There was no more time for talking, no more time for working through the complicated dynamics between Zade and me. I had a child

to save, and I was the only one in this room with the power to do it.

I raised the knife above the ritual circle and began the incantation that would sever Ollie’s connection to whatever dark magic was killing him.
The words flowed from my lips in a language older than werewolf packs, older than human civilization, calling on forces that existed before the world learned to fear witches.
The energy in the room exploded outward like a shockwave, and I felt every cell in my body light up with magical fire as I threw everything I had into breaking the connection that was slowly murdering an innocent child.
