Chapter 163
THORNE

Today was one of the surreal days in my life. Standing in front of a witch and not ripping her to shreds because she claimed to be the
only obstacle standing between Riley and certain death.
And in as much as I hated to admit it, even to myself. I needed her help because I don’t think the hospital would be able to treat this
even if I managed to get him to one on time.
Xenois was going to have my head for working with a witch but as long as it meant Riley was safe. I was willing to risk my morality.
The woman in front of me didn’t seem sinister. Aside from the general scent of what witches smelled like, there was no evil aura or
dark energy coming from her.
And truly she seemed like she didn’t want to fight me because if she wanted to, she would have stopped my heart just by mere
breathing. That’s how terrifying they were.
I let go of Carol as she moved back to the boy, checking up on him as I joined her.
I crouched beside Carol as she worked, watching her skilled hands apply what looked like a mixture of crushed herbs and some kind
of glowing paste to Riley’s broken body, I had no idea what it was doing but whatever it was, it seemed important.
The boy looked so small and fragile lying there on the rocks, his clothes still damp from the stream, his skin pale as moonlight,
reflecting on it.
His breathing was so slow that the intake of air, which made his chest heave felt like it was still.
It was hard to believe he was still alive at all, let alone that this witch might actually be able to save him.
“How did you come to be here?” I asked, keeping my voice low so as not to disturb her concentration. I needed answers, needed to understand how all the pieces of this nightmare fit together. I understood Sophia’s intention but what I didn’t get was why this stranger would help someone, a werewolf kid for that matter when being found in the wolf territory was instant death for their kind.
Carol didn’t look up from her work, her fingers moving with precision, like she knew what she was doing even with her eyes closed as
she traced symbols on Riley’s forehead with the glowing paste.
‘I was picking herbs in the forest,” she said not skipping a beat as she added.
“These woods are full of plants that mean nothing to werewolves but are incredibly valuable to witches.
Moonbell, shadow root, silver sage things that only grow in territories protected by pack magic.”

Chapter 163
I frowned, processing this information, that she handed to me, as I tried to understand the magnitude of this issue.
“You sneak into werewolf territory regularly?”
“Brave witches like me do, yes,” she replied with a slight shrug, clearly not bothered at the fact she was breaking the rule.

There are no border patrol guards standing watch in the middle of a forest. Your people focus on protecting your homes and meeting places, not every square mile of woodland. So we slip in, gather what we need, and slip out again.”
The casual way she described trespassing on our land should have made me angrier, but right now I was more focused on the fact that her illegal activities had put her in the right place at the right time to potentially save Riley’s life.
“So you were here when it happened?” I pressed.
Carol nodded, finally glancing up at me with eyes that held a mixture of sadness and anger. “I was harvesting silver sage near the cliff when I heard voices. At first I thought they were pack members who had discovered me, so I hid and waited for them to pass. But as I watched, I realized they weren’t looking for a witch – they were focused entirely on the boy.”
She returned her attention to Riley, spreading more of the glowing mixture across a particularly nasty cut on his arm. “I recognized him immediately. I thought it was Lumina’s son Ollie because I met him recently, about a month ago.”
I stopped moving, staring at her in shock. “Wait. You’ve been in the Alpha’s house before?”
Carol gave me a look that clearly said ‘now is not really the time to point out my illegal actions,’ but she answered anyway. “Lumina called me for help with a magical problem involving her son. I helped her create protective wards.”
The Implications of this hit me like a physical blow. Lumina had been involved with witchcraft? She’d brought a witch into Xenois’s
home? But before I could process this revelation fully, Carol continued her story.
“The woman with the boy – his mother, I assumed – kept calling him Riley, not Ollie. She seemed agitated, angry. She was telling him
things I couldn’t quite hear from my hiding spot, but her body language was threatening. Then she pushed him.”
“Pushed him off the cliff?”
“Without hesitation, Carol confirmed, her voice hardened with disgust. “She watched him fall, listened to him scream, and then she
just… left. Like he was garbage she was disposing of.”
I moved closer, kneeling beside her so I could help with whatever she needed. The clinical part of my mind that had been trained to
assess injuries was struggling with what I was seeing.
“How is Riley still alive from that fall? I’m not trying to be cruel, but a grown man would have no hope of surviving a drop like that.”
Carol’s hands never stopped moving as she worked, but I could see the concentration on her face intensify.

“When I got down here after they left, I expected to find a body to bury. But somehow, miraculously, he was still breathing. Barely, but breathing nonetheless. I think the necklace he was wearing provided some kind of protection, slowed his descent or cushioned the impact somehow.”
She gestured to the protective circle around Riley’s body, the candles and crystals that continued to burn and glow despite the night
wind.
“I’ve been using magic to create a life support system, drawing energy from the forest itself to keep him stabilized while I worked to heal his injuries. It’s been slow going this kind of trauma requires delicate work.”
As if summoned by her words, the necklace around Riley’s neck suddenly began to glow with an intense blue light. The metal links started to shimmer and warp, and I could swear I heard a high-pitched whining sound coming from the pendant.
“What’s happening?” I demanded, instinctively reaching toward the necklace before Carol caught my wrist.
