Chapter 207

I didn’t understand why everyone looked so worried as we all rushed to Alpha Zade’s big house. The adults kept whispering to each

other in hushed voices that made my stomach feel funny, like when Mama Sophia used to get that look in her eyes before she did

something bad to me or she wanted me to do something that would hurt Ollie, like the gloves she made me wear.

When we got to the house, they told me and Ollie to wait in the living room while they went upstairs to check on Alpha Zade. I sat

on the big couch next to my brother, swinging my legs back and forth because they didn’t reach the floor yet.

Ollie seemed nervous too, fidgeting with his hands the way he did when he was worried about something.

“Do you think Alpha Zade is really sick?” Ollie whispered to me, his green eyes wide with concern.

I shrugged, not really knowing how to answer. Adults got sick sometimes, I guessed, though I’d never seen a werewolf as strong as

Alpha Zade look weak or hurt.

“Maybe,” I said quietly. “Lynn looked really scared when she came to tell us.”

We sat there for what felt like forever, listening to the muffled sounds of conversation coming from upstairs. I could hear voices

getting louder sometimes, like they were arguing about something important. My real mama’s voice, and my real daddy’s voice, and Lyn’s

voice too.

“I’m bored,” Ollie finally announced, sliding off the couch with determination. “I want to see what’s happening. They never tell us

anything important.”

I felt my chest tighten with worry. “But they told us to stay here,” I protested weakly. “What if we get in trouble?”

Ollie gave me a look that reminded me exactly why we were twins, even though we’d been raised apart. “We’re not going to get in trouble, Riley. We’re just going to peek. Besides, if Alpha Zade is really sick, don’t you want to know what’s wrong with him? He’s been

nice to me even if I don’t really like him much.”

“Okay,” I said finally, getting up to follow Ollie toward the stairs. “But we have to be quiet.”

We crept up the stairs as carefully as we could, trying not to make the old wooden steps creak under our feet.

The voices got clearer as we got closer to what I assumed was Alpha Zade’s bedroom. The door was slightly open, and we could hear

everything they were saying inside.

“I don’t understand what kind of curse this is,” Lyn was saying, his voice tight with frustration and fear. “I’ve never seen markings like

these before. They’re spreading too fast for me to identify the magical signature.”

‘Is there anyone who might have a reason to target Zade?” That was my real daddy’s voice, sounding worried and angry at the same

time. “Someone who might want revenge against him for something?”

“Elder Simon is in prison with his mate for trying to execute Lyn,” Lynn replied. “Unless there are people who think his punishment

was unjust and they’re retaliating somehow.”

“We don’t have time to search for suspects in an entire city,” my real mama said, her voice breaking a little. “Zade is going to die if we

can’t figure this out soon.”

I felt Ollie grab my hand as we pressed closer to the door, both of us scared by how upset all the adults sounded. But when I peeked

through the crack in the door to see what was happening, my blood turned cold with recognition.

Alpha Zade was lying on his bed, his shirt open to reveal his chest and stomach. Dark lines were spreading across his skin like living

tattoos, twisting and writhing in patterns that made my eyes hurt to look at. But I recognized those markings immediately.

I’d seen them on my own skin more times than I could count.

The gasp that escaped my throat was loud enough that everyone in the room heard it. Before I could stop myself, I’d pushed the door

open wider, revealing both me and Ollie standing in the doorway.

“Boys!” Lyn said quickly, moving to button Alpha Zade’s shirt back up to cover the horrible markings. “You shouldn’t be here. This

isn’t something children should see.”

But I couldn’t stop staring at Alpha Zade’s pale face, at the way his body was curled up in pain just like mine used to be when Aunt Andy was “teaching” me lessons. Ollie was looking between all the adults with scared eyes, clearly not understanding what was happening.

“What’s wrong with Alpha Zade?” Ollie asked in a small voice. “Is he going to be okay?”

I wanted to answer him, wanted to tell him that I knew exactly what was wrong and that it was all my fault somehow. But the words stuck in my throat as memories I’d been trying to forget came flooding back.

‘Riley?” my real mama said gently, noticing how quiet I’d gone. “What is it, sweetheart? Do you know something about what’s

happening?”

I looked around the room at all their worried faces my real parents, who I was still getting used to thinking of as mine; Lyn, who had saved Ollie’s life; Lynn, who had been so kind to me; Thorne, who always treated me with respect even though I was just a kid.

They were all waiting for me to say something, but I was scared. What if they got angry at me for knowing about curse magic? What if they decided I was too dangerous to keep around because of all the things Aunt Andy had taught me?

But then I looked at Alpha Zade again, saw how much pain he was in, and I couldn’t stay quiet anymore.

‘Why did you make Aunt Andy angry?” I asked, the question tumbling out before I could stop it.

All the adults went very still, staring at me with expressions I couldn’t read. I immediately clapped my hand over my mouth, realizing

I’d said something I shouldn’t have. My hand automatically went to my neck, searching for the heavy chain that should have been there.

The compulsion necklace was gone.
