Chapter 209
“Aunt Andy is Mama Sophia’s sister,” I said quietly. “She lived with us sometimes, when Mama needed help with… with projects. She knew all kinds of magic – the kind that hurts people and makes them sick and makes them do things they don’t want to do.”
Lyn was examining the vial I’d given him, and I could see recognition in his eyes. “This is sophisticated magical work,” he murmured. “Whoever made this antidote knows exactly how the curse functions.”
“Aunt Andy made me practice,” I continued, the words coming easier now. “She would curse me with different kinds of pain magic, and then she would sit beside me while I cried and begged her to stop. She called it teaching lessons, like we were in class or something.”
My real daddy made a sound like a wounded animal, and I saw his hands clench into fists. But he wasn’t looking at me with anger – he was looking at me with the kind of fury that meant he wanted to hurt someone else, not me.
“She would show me all the different antidotes and cures,” I went on, encouraged by their reactions. “She said I needed to learn about magic so I could be useful to Mama’s plans. She said someday I might need to help curse other people, and I had to know how everything
worked.”
“Oh, baby,” my real mama whispered, tears streaming down her face. “I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry that happened to you.”
I didn’t understand why she was apologizing when she hadn’t done anything wrong, but before I could ask, Ollie was tugging on my
sleeve.
“Riley,” he said, his voice small and scared, “did that lady hurt you a lot?”
I nodded, not trusting my voice to stay steady if I tried to explain just how much Aunt Andy had hurt me over the years. The curse magic, the poison experiments, the times she’d used me to test new torture methods she was developing for Mama Sophia’s enemies.
“But I learned a lot,” I added quickly, not wanting them to think I was completely useless. “I know how most of her curses work now. I might be able to help Alpha Zade, if you want me to.”
The adults all exchanged looks that I couldn’t interpret, but I could tell they were talking to each other without words the way grown-ups sometimes did.
‘Riley,” Lyn said finally, “if you know how to help Alpha Zade, then yes, we definitely want your help. But first, I need you to understand something very important.”
He crouched down so we were at the same eye level again, his expression serious but kind.
“Nothing that woman did to you was okay,” he said firmly. “Adults are never supposed to hurt children like that, no matter what the reason. It wasn’t your fault, and you didn’t deserve any of it. Do you understand?”
I wanted to believe him, but it was hard when Aunt Andy had spent so long telling me that the pain was necessary, that it was the only way to make me strong enough to be useful to my family.

“None of that matters,” my real daddy interrupted, his voice rough with emotion. “Children are supposed to disobey sometimes. It ́s
normal and healthy. No adult should ever hurt a child as punishment, especially not with magic designed to cause suffering.”
I looked at Ollie, who was nodding in agreement even though he looked like he was trying not to cry. Maybe they were right. Maybe
all those times Aunt Andy had hurt me really weren’t my fault after all.
“Can you help us save Alpha Zade?” Lyn asked gently. “Can you tell us more about how Aunt Andy’s curses work?”
I nodded, feeling something like hope bloom in my chest for the first time in longer than I could remember. Finally, all those horrible lessons Aunt Andy had forced me to endure might actually be useful for something good instead of something evil.
“The lover’s curse is tricky,” I said, settling cross-legged on the floor as I prepared to share everything I’d learned. “It’s designed to make the person suffer until someone who loves them begs for mercy. But Aunt Andy always had backup plans in case her first curse
didn’t work the way she wanted.”
As I began to explain everything I knew about curse magic and antidotes, I saw the adults listening carefully to every word. For once, the terrible things that had been done to me might actually help save someone instead of hurt them.
Maybe that made all the pain worth something after all.
