Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 239

Chapter 239

XENOIS

ཏྲཱི(94)

I pulled out my phone to check on Lumina before we left for what could very well be a suicide mission. The boys would be at their

therapy appointment by now, and I wanted to hear her voice one more time, just in case things went wrong in Shadow City.

The phone rang once, twice, then went straight to an automated message system. “The number you have dialed is not available.

Please leave a message after the tone.”

My wolf stirred uneasily at the unusual response, but I pushed the concern aside. Hospital buildings often had poor cell reception,

and Dr. Sloane had probably asked them to turn their phones off during the session anyway.

When the beep sounded, I kept my voice steady and reassuring. “Hey, love. I hope the appointment is going well. I won’t be available

to take calls for the next few hours, so don’t panic if you can’t reach me. My parents, Carol, and Marcus are heading to Shadow City with

me to try a preemptive strike on Andy. We’re hoping to catch her off guard before she can make another move against our family. This is

better than waiting for her to come to us. We have kids, that does not need to get caught in the crossfire, not if I can help stop it before

then.

I paused, swallowing hard against the emotion threatening to creep into my voice. “Tell the boys I love them more than anything, and

that this nightmare will be over soon. Take care of yourself, Lumina. I’ll call you as soon as I can.”

I ended the call and immediately powered down the phone. The last thing we needed was for it to ring at the wrong moment and give

away our position during the infiltration. I didn’t plan on letting Andy make my mate have a dead mate or my kids, a dead father. Besides

Thorne was there to look after them, what was the worse that could happen?

Slipping the phone into my pocket, I made my way back outside where my parents, Carol, and Marcus were waiting in the morning

sunlight. The tension was palpable as everyone prepared mentally for what lay ahead.

‘Did Lumina answer?” my mother asked immediately, her eyes searching my face for reassurance.

“It went to voicemail, but I left her a message,” I replied, trying to project more confidence than I felt. ‘She’ll know what’s happening.

My mother nodded, some of the worry leaving her expression. ‘Good. I’m relieved the boys are safe and far away from all this.”

Her words sparked a familiar irritation in my chest. “What about my mate?” I asked pointedly. “Doesn’t she deserve your care and

concern too?”

My mother’s face tightened, and she looked away uncomfortably. “We have… a lot of bad blood between us, Xenois. I don’t know how

to look at her anymore, knowing how unfairly I treated her all these years.”

“Then maybe it’s time to figure it out,” I said firmly, “I let a lot slide back when it seemed like she might have killed Xena, when she

was forced into marriage to keep her under surveillance. But I’d appreciate it if you could find a way to apologize to her.”

My father stepped closer, his expression serious as he nodded his head agreeing with me. “I’ll make sure she does, whether Lumina

accepts it or not. Your mother knows she owes her that much.”

“I’d rather have Andy kill me than grovel to that woman,” my mother grumbled, but there was less venom in her voice than usual.

Before I could respond to her comment, Carol approached our group, effectively ending the conversation. “Is everything alright on

your end?” she asked, glancing between my parents and me with concern. She seemed to be noticing the tense situation between my mum

and I.

“Yes,” I replied, grateful for the interruption, as it effectively ended the conversation.

I turned to Marcus, who was standing slightly apart from the rest of us, scanning the horizon with obvious impatience. “What are we

waiting for? Why are we still standing out here?”

“I called some of my kind for help,” Marcus explained, his voice carrying a mixture of hope and uncertainty. He looked like he wasn’t

certain the people he called were going to even show up, but he didn’t want to tell us that as well either.

“We’re going to need assistance getting past Shadow City’s defenses, and I have friends who specialize in that kind of infiltration.

Trust me on this, they are perfect for the job. Getting you all in, will be a breeze for them.”

Just as he finished speaking, three figures appeared at inhuman speed, moving so fast they were just blurs until they came to an

abrupt stop directly in front of us. The sudden appearance made my parents tense and reach for weapons, but I held up a hand to keep

them calm.

The three vampires had clearly been racing each other, and one of them was celebrating his apparent victory while the other two looked annoyed at being beaten. They were all young-looking, probably turned in their early twenties, with the kind of casual confidence

that came from supernatural speed and strength.

“Yes! Still the fastest!” the winner crowed, pumping his fist in the air.

“Kashton, XY, you’re getting slow in your old age. You owe me twenty bucks each.”

“Only because you cheated,” grumbled one of the others, a shorter vampire with striking silver eyes, as he seemed to be sulking over the fact that he lost. “Using that shortcut through the industrial district wasn’t part of the agreed route.”

The third vampire, who had an unusual name that sounded like letters XY – just shook his head in disgust. “I should have known better than to race against Kyle. He’s been cheating at competitions since we were turned.”

Marcus stepped forward, immediately taking control of the situation, as the vampires were still caught upon their world, if they had

noticed who we were, they weren’t showing it yet.

“Thank you all for coming. Kyle, XY, Kashton – I appreciate you dropping everything to help me out, especially when I was being vague on the phone and didn’t tell you what the mission entails.”

The three vampires immediately sobered when they registered the serious tone in Marcus’s voice. Kyle’s celebratory grin faded as he

took in the group of werewolves standing with Marcus and Carol.

“Marcus,” Kyle said slowly, his eyes narrowing as he looked between us and his old friend, suspicion brewing in it, as I could see him

taking a few steps back and going on a defensive stance.

*Please tell me you didn’t call us here to help werewolves.”
