Chapter 248

“What’s happening here? I demanded, struggling against my restraints despite knowing it was futile, “What have you done to this
child?”
Andy’s smile widened, and she looked at me with the same expression a scientist might wear when examining an interesting
specimen. “Lake dragged you from that hospital the moment you used your powers,” she explained conversationally. “You see, he’s my
perfect creation. The first child I ever successfully broke and rebullt exactly as I needed.”
The casual way she spoke about breaking a child made bile rise in my throat. I could see now what she’d done to Lake – the same systematic destruction of identity and innocence she’d attempted with Riley, but taken to its ultimate conclusion.
“And now Lake is going to help me,” Andy continued, her hand still resting on the boy’s head. “Just like he saved me from that surprise attack your mate and his family had planned. Did you really think you could infiltrate Shadow City without me knowing? My
network extends far beyond what you imagined.”
The implication hit me like a physical blow. If Andy had known about Xenois and the others going to Shadow City, then she’d been prepared for them. The whole mission had been walking into a trap.
“What do you want with me?” I asked, though I was afraid I already knew the answer.
“Your healing abilities, of course,” Andy said matter-of-factly. “I have use for someone who can repair damage quickly and efficiently. And unlike your brother, you can’t fight back effectively. Your werewolf genes are so dormant you might as well be human.”
. Lake stepped closer to my chair, and I could see the unnatural hardness in his young eyes. Whatever Andy had done to him had created something that was no longer entirely a child at least not in any meaningful sense.

“Riley abandoned me,” Lake said, his voice carrying a hurt so deep it made my chest ache. “He promised we’d stay together, that we’d look out for each other. But the moment he found a new family, he forgot I ever existed.”
“That’s not true,” I said urgently, recognizing the twisted logic Andy had planted in the boy’s mind. “Riley never forgot about you. He just didn’t know where you were or how to find you.”
But Lake shook his head, his expression growing colder. “She showed me the videos. Riley playing with his new brother, laughing with his new mother, living in a big house with people who actually wanted him. He never even looked for me.”
Andy’s manipulation was masterful and sickening. She’d taken this child’s natural feelings of abandonment and twisted them into something toxic, using his pain as a weapon against the very person who had probably tried to protect him.
“Riley was just a child himself,” I said desperately. “He couldn’t have saved you even if he’d tried. He was fighting just to survive.”
“Enough talking,” Andy said sharply. “Lake, we discussed what needed to happen. It’s time to begin.”
The boy nodded and moved to a table I hadn’t noticed before, covered with instruments that made my healing abilities recoil

instinctively. Medical equipment mixed with things that looked more like torture devices, all arranged with clinical precision.

“You see, Lyn,” Andy continued, settling into a chair across from me, “I need information about your pack’s defenses, their plans, their
weaknesses. And Lake here has developed quite a talent for extracting that kind of information.”
Lake selected a scalpel from the table, testing its edge with a casual familiarity that turned my stomach. The way he handled the
blade showed this wasn’t his first time using such tools.
“I don’t know anything useful,” I said quickly, panic beginning to override my attempts to stay calm. “I’m just a healer. I don’t get
involved in tactical planning or security decisions.”
“We’ll see about that,” Andy said with false sympathy. “Lake is very thorough. He’ll find something useful, even if you don’t think you
know it.”
The boy approached me with the scalpel, his expression completely emotionless. This was the end result of Andy’s methods – a child
so broken and rebuilt that he could inflict pain without hesitation or remorse.
“Lake, listen to me,” I said urgently, trying one last time to reach whatever might be left of the real child buried beneath Andy’s conditioning. “This isn’t who you really are. She’s made you into something you were never meant to be.”
For just a moment, something flickered in the boy’s eyes – uncertainty, maybe even pain. But then Andy spoke again.
“Remember what we discussed, Lake. Remember how Riley chose his new family over you. Remember how he never even tried to find
you or help you.”
The moment of uncertainty vanished, replaced by cold determination. Lake raised the scalpel, and I realized with growing horror that Andy had created the perfect weapon a child so damaged that he could be turned against anyone, even other children who had suffered
the same abuse.
