Chapter 247
LYN
Cold water hit my face like a slap, jolting me awake with a gasp that sent pain shooting through my ribs. My head pounded with a rhythm that matched my racing heartbeat as consciousness returned in fragmented pieces. I tried to move, only to discover that thick
metal cuffs bound my wrists and ankles to what felt like a heavy wooden chair bolted to the ground.
The restraints weren’t ordinary metal – they felt dense and cold against my skin in a way that made my healing abilities feel muted
and distant. Lead. Someone had done their research and knew exactly how to neutralize my powers.
I blinked rapidly, trying to adjust to the darkness that surrounded me. The air was stale and carried the scent of dampness and
something else I couldn’t quite identify – something that reminded me of hospitals and chemicals. Wherever I was, it felt underground,
isolated from the outside world.
“You’re awake,” a small voice said from somewhere in front of me.

I strained my eyes, trying to see who had spoken. The voice belonged to a child, but I couldn’t make out any details in the gloom. All
I could see was a small silhouette holding what looked like an empty bucket.
The last clear memory I had was of the hospital attack. The lights going out, emergency sirens wailing, the metallic scent of blood
filling the air. I’d been trying to help fight off the attackers when I saw Lumina locked in deadly combat with that nightwalker creature.
The thing had been going for her throat, and she was losing ground fast.
. Without thinking, I’d reached out with my abilities and turned off gravity in a desperate attempt to give her an advantage. I remembered the satisfying sound of the nightwalker’s neck snapping as Lumina managed to twist free, but the effort of manipulating gravity so suddenly and forcefully had been too much. The power had snapped back like a rubber band, and the last thing I remembered
was a crushing sensation as everything went black.
But now I was here, wherever here was, and nothing made sense.
“What’s going on?” I asked the child, my voice hoarse and rough. “Who are you? What happened to me?”
The small figure stepped closer, but still remained in the shadows just beyond my vision. “Did Riley ever talk about me?” the child
asked instead of answering my questions. “My name is Lake.”
I searched my memory, trying to recall if Riley had ever mentioned someone by that name. But I came up empty. In all our conversations, all the times he’d opened up about his past with Sophia, I couldn’t remember him ever mentioning another child.
“No,” I said honestly. “I’m sorry, but Riley never mentioned you.”
The silence that followed felt heavy and dangerous. I could sense the child’s reaction even though I couldn’t see his face clearly – a sudden stillness that spoke of hurt and anger building beneath the surface.

Chapter 247
94
“He forgot me,” Lake said finally, his voice carrying a bitterness that seemed far too mature for someone so young. “Just like she said
he would.”
Before I could ask who ‘she’ was, light suddenly flooded the space around us. I squinted against the brightness, my eyes watering as
they adjusted to the harsh illumination. What I saw made my blood run cold.
I was in what looked like an abandoned warehouse or factory space, with concrete walls stained with rust and moisture. But it was
the child standing in front of me that made my heart clench with horror and pity.
Lake couldn’t have been more than eight years old, with dark hair that hung in his eyes and clothes that looked expensive but somehow wrong on his small frame. But it was his expression that truly disturbed me – the cold, calculating look in his eyes belonged on an adult, not a child. Someone had stolen this boy’s innocence and replaced it with something dark and twisted.
“See?” a familiar voice said from behind Lake, and my stomach dropped as Andy stepped into view. She placed a possessive hand on the boy’s head, her fingers threading through his hair in a gesture that might have looked maternal if not for the predatory smile on her face. “I told you I was the only one who cares for you. I wasn’t lying when I said Riley had forgotten you completely.”
Lake nodded, his small hands clenching into fists. “A deal is a deal,” he said, throwing the empty bucket aside with a violence that
seemed disproportionate to his size.
