Chapter 250
OLLIE
A
24
A man lay sprawled on the concrete about ten feet away from where I’d been unconscious. His eyes were wide open in a silent
scream, and there were claw marks across his chest that looked like they’d been made by something with very large, very sharp claws. Blood had pooled around him and then trailed off toward a dark alley, as if someone or something had been dragged away after being
wounded.
I backed away from the corpse, my heart hammering against my ribs. The blood trail led into shadows so deep I couldn’t see where it ended. Someone had survived whatever fight had happened here, but they’d been hurt badly enough to leave a trail like that.
Was it Riley? Was my brother somewhere in those shadows, bleeding and alone?
I wanted to follow the trail, but I was too scared to go into that dark alley by myself. What if whoever had killed this man was still
there? What if they decided I was a threat too?
Instead, I made my way back into the building, searching for a phone or some other way to call for help. Most of the offices were locked, but I finally found one on a lower floor where the door had been left open. There was a telephone on the desk, and I grabbed it
with shaking hands.
Nothing. No dial tone, no connection. The phone lines must have been cut during the attack.
Fighting back a fresh wave of tears, I made my way outside. The street was chaos – people running everywhere, emergency vehicles with flashing lights, guards in tactical gear trying to maintain some kind of order. I could see them evacuating people from nearby buildings, treating the whole area like a crime scene.
That gave me hope. If there were guards here, if Alpha Zade’s people were involved, then maybe I could get help after all.
I spotted a guard standing near an ambulance, talking into a walkie-talkie in the kind of urgent, professional tone that meant he was dealing with something important. I ran toward him as fast as my shaky legs could carry me.
*Excuse me,” I called out, tugging on his uniform sleeve. “Please, I need to talk to Alpha Zade. It’s important.”
The guard looked down at me with irritation, barely pausing in his radio conversation. “Kid, Alpha Zade doesn’t have time to talk to little kids right now. There’s been a major incident, and we’re trying to coordinate a city-wide search. Go find your parents.”
“But I don’t have parents!” I said desperately. “And my brother is missing, and there are dead people, and I need help!”
“Look, kid,” the guard said, his voice getting sharper, ‘I don’t have time for this. There are real emergencies happening right now.”
Something inside me snapped. I’d been brave for Riley. I’d jumped off buildings and run from killers and done things that terrified me because he’d asked me to. The least this stupid guard could do was listen to me for five seconds.

Chapter 250
I stomped down hard on his foot with all the force I could muster.

The guard yelped in surprise and pain, dropping his walkie-talkie as he hopped backward. I dove for the radio before he could recover
it, snatching it up and pressing what I hoped was the right button.
“Alpha Zade!” I shouted into the device. “Alpha Zade, this is Ollie! I need help! Riley’s missing and there’s blood everywhere and I
think he might be dead!”
The response was immediate. Alpha Zade’s voice crackled through the speaker, filled with shock and relief. “Ollie? Ollie, is that really
you? Where are you?”
Before I could answer, I heard another voice in the background – Mama Lumina, sounding like she was crying. “Ollie, baby, where are
you? Are you hurt? Where’s Riley?”
“I don’t know where Riley is,” I sobbed into the radio. “There was a man with a gun, and Riley knocked me out, and when I woke up
there was blood everywhere and Riley was gone and there’s a dead person and I’m scared.”
“Listen to me very carefully,” Alpha Zade said, his voice taking on that calm, commanding tone that always made me feel safer. “Don’t move from where you are. Don’t talk to anyone except my guards. We’re coming to get you right now. Can you tell me exactly where you
are?”
I looked around, trying to spot landmarks or street signs. The guard I’d stomped on was staring at me with a mixture of anger and dawning realization, probably figuring out that I wasn’t just some random lost kid.
“I’m near the office building next to the hospital,” I said. “There are guards and ambulances and stuff. I think I’m with one of your
people.”
“Put him on the radio,” Alpha Zade ordered.
I held the walkie-talkie out to the guard, who took it with considerably more respect than he’d shown me a few minutes earlier.
“This is Officer Martinez,” he said. “I have the boy. He appears uninjured but distressed. Requesting immediate backup and medical
evaluation.”
“Protect him until we arrive,’ Alpha Zade’s voice commanded. “That boy is pack family, and if anything happens to him, you’ll answer
to me personally.”
“Understood, sir. We’ll keep him safe.”
The guard handed the radio back to me, his whole demeanor changed. Suddenly I wasn’t just an annoying kid – I was someone
important, someone worth protecting.
“Ollie, Mama Lumina’s voice came through the speaker, thick with tears. “We’re coming, baby. Just hold on. Everything’s going to be
okay.”

But I wasn’t sure everything was going to be okay, Riley was still missing, possibly dead, and I was the only one who knew what had really happened on that rooftop. I was the only one who could tell them about the gunshots and the snarling and the blood trail that led
Into the shadows.
I hugged the walkie-talkie close to my chest and waited for my family to come save me, even though I wasn’t sure there was anything
left to save.
