Chapter 264
RILEY
94
Across the room, another figure had appeared – Zade, rushing to check on Lyn’s condition. The Alpha’s face was grim as he assessed the healer’s injuries, his hands already glowing with basic first aid magic.
Lake had managed to push the dead nightwalker off himself and was climbing to his feet, blood streaming from the claw marks across his chest. When he saw Xenois holding me, his face twisted with fury.
“Get away from him!” Lake snarled, moving toward us with murderous intent.
That’s when I made my choice. I drove my elbow back into Xenois’s ribs with all the strength Andy’s training had given me, breaking free of his grip as he doubled over in pain. Without hesitation, I ran to Lake’s side, grabbing his hand as we headed for the nearest exit.
But everywhere we turned, the battle was raging. Supernatural beings fought and died in every corridor, the air thick with the smell of blood and burning magic. Lake kept trying to open a portal – I could see the concentration on his face as he reached for his space- manipulation abilities – but the chaos and constant explosions made it impossible for him to focus properly.
That’s when Andy’s voice cut through the noise like a blade.
“Lake!” she screamed from somewhere nearby. “Hold the boy captive! If they don’t back down immediately, kill him!”
I felt Lake stiffen beside me. For a moment, I thought he might actually consider following Andy’s order. But then his hand tightened on mine, and I knew his answer.
“No,” he said firmly, his voice carrying clearly despite the surrounding chaos. “I won’t hurt Riley.”
Andy appeared through the smoke and debris, her face twisted with rage as magical energy crackled around her fingers. “You ungrateful little wretch! After everything I’ve done for you!”
She raised her hand to strike Lake down, raw destructive magic gathering in her palm. But before the attack could reach him, I stepped directly into its path, my arms spread wide to shield Lake with my own body.
The killing spell never reached us. Lumina slammed into Andy from the side with the force of a freight train, her own fury finally unleashed as she dragged the older woman away from us.
*Stay away from my son!” Lumina roared, her voice already changing as she began to shift into her full wolf form.
Lake and I tried to use the distraction to escape, but the building was shaking apart around us. Someone had thrown some kind of explosive device into the middle of the combat zone, and I could see the deadly sphere arcing through the air toward a group of fighters.
Lake saw it too. Without hesitation, he opened a portal directly in the bomb’s path, trying to redirect the explosion away from the people below. But the effort was too much for his already exhausted abilities. The portal collapsed just as the device reached it, and the

resulting explosion knocked Lake unconscious, blood streaming from his nose and ears as his small body hit the concrete floor.
“Lake! I dropped to my knees beside him, my hands checking for a pulse as panic filled my chest. He was so still, so pale. For a horrible moment, I thought Andy had finally succeeded in taking away the last person I truly cared about.

Andy’s laughter echoed through the chamber, cruel and triumphant. “He deserves everything he gets for defying me! Ungrateful little
beast!”
Something inside me snapped. The rage I’d been carrying since Sophia’s death, the pain of being betrayed and abandoned, the fear of losing Lake – it all crystallized into a single, burning need for revenge.
I grabbed one of Lake’s scalpels from where it had fallen, my fingers closing around the familiar weight as I turned toward Andy with murder in my eyes. She had taken everything from me. Sophia, my sense of safety, and now possibly Lake. It was time for her to pay.
But before I could reach her, Lumina used Andy’s distraction to her advantage. The woman who’d claimed to be my new mother moved with deadly precision, her wolf form allowing her to overpower Andy and pin her to the ground.
Carol appeared as if from nowhere, lead-lined cuffs in her hands as she quickly secured Andy’s wrists. The magical restraints immediately began suppressing the older woman’s abilities, leaving her helpless and raging on the concrete floor.
The rest of our group poured into the chamber – Kyle, Kashton, Marcus, Lynn, Thorn, Rivers. All of them looking for me, all of them ready to take me back to a life I wasn’t sure I wanted.
I gathered Lake’s unconscious form in my arms, trying to lift him so we could still escape. But XY moved to block my path, his enhanced speed making it impossible for me to dodge around him.
“Riley, stop,” he said gently. “You’re safe now. Both of you are safe.”
But I didn’t feel safe. I felt trapped, surrounded by people who claimed to love me but had destroyed everything I’d once believed in. And Lake – the only person left who truly understood me – was unconscious in my arms, possibly dying because he’d chosen to protect others instead of himself. Lake was dying because I had forced him to choose me over Andy.
Looking around at their faces, I realized that I was all alone and at their mercy.
