Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 267

Chapter 267

RILEY

Z

The next few hours blurred together, quickly that I almost got numb in all of that time. The only thing I could see was doctors scrambling up and down to figure out a way to diagnose Lake while at the same time trying not to get killed by the dimensional chaos.

I sat beside Lake’s bed, one hand holding his while the other tried to dodge the various objects that kept tumbling through his portals

Doctors worked around me, their faces set in grim concentration as they tried to assess his injuries without triggering another magical episode.

“The good news is that there’s no sign of permanent brain damage,” Dr. Sloane finally announced stepping closer to me. I never knew that she was a doctor but I had assumed she was a therapist back then. Still I wasn’t going to give her an apology. for hitting her over the head with a vase. I was drawn back to reality over what She was saying.

“The bleeding has stopped, and his vital signs are stabilizing. But his powers…”

She gestured toward a portal that had just opened to show someone’s kitchen. A very confused dog poked its head through before the rift snapped shut.

“His controls over his power are completely disrupted, I can see here that he was registered as a were witch but the werewolf side of him as been dormant so I can afford to wake up his wolf that way. Wale need to find another way to figure this out she continued.

“The trauma seems to have damaged whatever neural pathways allowed him to regulate his abilities. Right now, his subconscious is just… reaching out randomly, trying to find something familiar.”

“But he’ll get better, right?” I asked, my voice small with fear this was the first time that I sono or realized that whatever Lake was going through. He would not be able shrug it off easily and bounce back like normal..

“His powers will come back under control?”

Dr. Sloane’s hesitation told me everything I needed to know.

“We don’t really understand how dimensional manipulation works on a brain level. This kind of injury is completely u unheard of so we have no idea what we are expecting to walk into. He might recover full control, or…”

“Or he might be stuck like this forever,” I finished quietly.

Another portal opened, this one connecting us briefly to what looked like a subway tunnel. The sound of a distant train echoed through the hospital room before the rift closed.

Lake’s eyes fluttered open again, and this time they seemed to focus on my face. “Riley?” he whispered, his voice hoarse but coherent.

“I’m here,” I assured him, squeezing his hand gently blinking back tears so that he wouldn’t see me cry. I did not want him to worry

about me. I’m right here.”

“Don’t leave me,” he pleaded, and I could see lucidity returning to his gaze. “Everyone always leaves me. Andy left me. Sophia left me.

You left me. Please don’t leave me again.”

The accusation hit me like a physical blow, but I forced myself to meet his eyes. “I didn’t leave you by choice, I said. “They took me

away. But I’m here now, and I’m not going anywhere.”

As if responding to my promise, the chaotic portal activity began to slow, down as if he was the one shutting them down.

The rifts became smaller, less frequent, until finally they stopped opening altogether. Lake’s grip on my hand relaxed slightly, and for the first time since the explosion, he seemed to truly see where we were.

“Hospital?” he asked, taking in the medical equipment and sterile white walls.

“You got hurt stopping that bomb, I explained. “You saved everyone. You saved me.”

“But Andy… is she…?”

“Captured. Carol put those lead cuffs on her. It’s over.”

Lake closed his eyes, relief washing over his features. But then his expression darkened as reality set in. He seemed to have remember everything that has happeneding span of hours.

“They’re going to separate us,” he said with quiet certainty. “Your family. They’ll take you away from me now that the danger’s over.”

I looked toward the door of the hospital room, knowing that just beyond it, Xenois and the others were probably discussing exactly that. They’d want to take me back to their pack, back to the life they thought I belonged in. And Lake… Lake would be alone again, just like he’d been before Andy found him.

us.”

“No,” I said firmly. “I promised I wouldn’t leave you, and I meant it.”

“But how can you stop them? They’re your family. They have legal custody. They have power and resources and-”

“And I have you,” I interrupted. “When your portals start working properly again, we can go anywhere. Somewhere they I never find

Lake’s eyes widened. “You’d really do that? Leave everything behind for me?”

I thought about Ollie, about the brother who’d looked up to me and trusted me to protect him. I thought about Lumina, who’d fought Andy with a mother’s fury to defend me. I thought about the life they were offering me – safe, stable, full of people who claimed to love

But then I looked at Lake, at this boy who’d sacrificed himself to save people who’d never shown him kindness, who’d spent years

being shaped into a weapon but had chosen to protect rather than destroy.

“You’re my family too,” I said simply. “The first family I ever really had. I’m not losing that again.”

A small smile crossed Lake’s face, and I felt his powers stir gently beneath my touch controlled this time, responsive to his will rather than his trauma.

“So what do we do?” he asked.

I glanced toward the window, toward the world beyond this hospital room where adults would try to make decisions about our lives without consulting us.

“First, you get better,” I said. “And then… then we disappear.”
