Chapter 266

“We have to restrain him before he accidentally opens a portal to somewhere dangerous,” Zade said, moving toward us with obvious
reluctance.
“Don’t touch him!” I snarled, positioning myself protectively over Lake’s trembling form. “He’s scared enough already!”
“Riley, please,” Lumina’s voice came from behind me, gentle but urgent. “Let us help him. Let us help both of you.”
I turned to look at her, this woman who claimed to be my mother but who’d been part of the group that killed Sophia. Her face was streaked with dirt and blood from her fight with Andy, but her eyes held genuine concern – not just for me, but for Lake too.
“You want to help?” I asked, my voice bitter. “Then keep everyone away from us. He only responds to me.”
It was true
–
as long as I kept talking to Lake, kept my hand in his, the portals became smaller and less frequent. His powers were still wildly unstable, but my presence seemed to provide some kind of anchor for his fractured control.
“Okay,” Lumina said after a moment’s hesitation. “Okay. But we have to get him to a hospital. He’s losing too much blood, and there might be internal injuries we can’t see.”
The ride to the hospital was a nightmare of chaotic magic and dimensional instability. Lake remained semiconscious, his grip on my hand never loosening as portals continued to open and close around us at random intervals. At one point, a portal opened directly beneath the ambulance, and we briefly found ourselves driving through what looked like someone’s living room before emerging back onto the highway. That kid was never going to believe his eyes and neither would his peers believe his story
The paramedics tried their best to treat Lake’s injuries, but every time they attempted to attach monitoring equipment or start an IV, his panic would spike and more portals would appear. It became clear that I was the only thing keeping his powers from completely spiraling out of control.
“Talk to him,” one of the paramedics urged. “Keep him calm. We’re almost there.”
“Lake,” I murmured, leaning close to his ear. “Remember when we used to hide in that old warehouse downtown? You’d make those little portals to steal food from the grocery store, and we’d pretend we were master thieves?”
A tiny smile flickered across his pale lips, and the latest portal – which had been showing what looked like the bottom of the ocean snapped shut.
“You were always better at the sneaky stuff than me,” I continued. “I was too impatient, too angry. But you could wait for hours, watching and planning, making sure we got exactly what we needed.”
The hospital was in chaos by the time we arrived. Word had apparently spread about the “portal boy” who was accidentally connecting their emergency room to random locations across the city. I could see staff members trying to catc h various displaced objects and animals that had tumbled through Lake’s unstable dimensional rifts.

“We need to sedate him,” one of the doctors said as they wheeled Lake’s gurney through the doors. “These power fluctuations are
dangerous for everyone in the building.”
“No!” I said firmly, refusing to let go of Lake’s hand even as they tried to guide me away from the stretcher. “He needs me. If you
sedate him while he’s this scared, you might make it worse.”
Dr. Sloane appeared in the hallway, still wearing clothes that looked like she’d come straight from the compound assault. “What’s his
condition?” she asked the paramedics.
“Severe head trauma, possible internal bleeding, and uncontrolled magical discharge, came the rapid-fire response. “The portals are
random and frequent. We couldn’t even get proper vitals because every piece of equipment we tried to use would disappear through a
dimensional rift.”
Dr. Sloane looked at me, then at Lake’s unconscious form, then at the small portal that had just opened near the ceiling to deposit
someone’s lost shoe on the floor.
“Bring him to trauma room three,” she decided. “Riley, you’re coming with us. It seems you’re the only thing keeping him stable.”
