Rebirth of the Broken Luna A Second Chance at Luna's Heart novel Chapter 288

Chapter 288

THORNE

The weight of exhaustion pressed down on my shoulders as I reviewed the transport manifests for what felt like the hundredth time

that morning.

Getting Lake’s medical equipment back to Silver Creek was proving to be a logistical nightmare that required specialized vehicles, trained medical personnel, and enough security to protect a small convoy.

Between coordinating with Dr. Sloane, arranging pack housing assignments, and managing the political fallout of our extended

absence, I felt like I’d aged a decade in the past week.

Samuel and Silvia had been invaluable in helping prepare our return strategy, their years of experience in pack politics proving crucial as we crafted explanations for the council that wouldn’t cause mass panic or rebellion. The decision to lift the supernatural ban in

Silver Creek was going to be controversial enough without adding the full truth about Andy’s psychological warfare and Riley’s

conditioning to the mix.

“The council’s going to push back hard on the supernatural integration,” Samuel warned, looking up from the draft proposal we’d been

working on.

“Half of them still remember the old wars, still believe that mixing with other species weakens pack purity.”

“Then they’ll have to evolve or be replaced,” I replied, perhaps more sharply than necessary. The stress was getting to me in ways I hadn’t anticipated, making me irritable and short-tempered with people who were only trying to help.

The truth was, I felt completely out of my depth. At twenty-eight, I’d been thrust into the role of acting Alpha while Xenois dealt with his family crisis, and the responsibility was overwhelming. Every decision I made affected hundreds of pack members, and I was constantly second-guessing myself, wondering if someone older and more experienced would handle things better.

Carol looked up from her corner of the room where she’d been reviewing medical protocols with Dr. Sloane.

“The supernatural allies made all the difference in this conflict,” she pointed out.

“Without MY magical expertise, Marcus’s and the rest of the halfblood speed and tactical knowledge of Shadow city, plus the combined efforts of witches and were witches we never would have survived Andy’s attacks.”

“Logic doesn’t always translate to acceptance,” Marcus added grimly. He still bore the physical and emotional scars from his near- death experience, and Carol rarely left his side these days. Their brush with mortality had only strengthened their bond, making them

almost sickeningly devoted to each other.

Kyle, XY, and Kashton were huddled around a separate table, their unusual relationship dynamic still something I was trying to understand. The three of them had been together for decades, their immortal nature making traditional relationship timelines irrelevant. They functioned as a unit in ways that both impressed and intimidated me, their coordination in battle and planning sessions seamless in

a way that spoke to deep intimacy and trust.

Watching them made me acutely aware of my own isolation. Everyone in this room had someone Carol and Marcus with their

intense romantic connection, Kyle’s triad with their complex but stable arrangement, Samuel and Silvia with their decades of marriage,

even Xenois and Lumina working through their complicated reunion. And here I was, the perpetual third wheel, the guy who handled

logistics while everyone else had lives worth living.

The feeling of being left behind was hitting me harder than it should have, making me question choices I’d made over the years. How many potential relationships had I sacrificed for pack duty? How many chances at personal happiness had I passed up because work

seemed more important?

I was pulled from my increasingly morose thoughts by the sound of footsteps in the hallway. Rivers appeared in the doorway, Zade’s second-in-command looking as tired as I felt but somehow managing to make exhaustion look effortlessly attractive. His dark hair was mussed from running his hands through it, and there were ink stains on his fingers from whatever paperwork he’d been wrestling with.

“How’s the planning going?” he asked, moving into the room with the easy confidence that seemed to come naturally to him.

Something about his presence made my pulse quicken in a way that caught me completely off guard. Rivers had always been professional and competent during our interactions, but I’d been too focused on pack business to really notice the way his eyes crinkled when he smiled, or how his voice had this warm quality that made even mundane logistics sound interesting.

Without thinking, without any conscious decision on my part, I opened my mouth and heard myself ask, “Do you have a mate?”

The room went dead silent. Every conversation stopped, every pen froze mid-sentence, every eye in the place turned to stare at me with varying degrees of shock and amusement. Rivers blinked at me like I’d just started speaking in tongues, his expression shifting from confusion to something that might have been curiosity.

“Huh?” he asked, clearly not sure he’d heard correctly.

Heat flooded my face as I realized what I’d just said out loud. My brain scrambled for damage control, for some way to salvage the

situation without looking like a complete idiot.

‘I said, do you want to eat?” I blurted out, which was somehow even worse than the original question.

The silence that followed was deafening. Then Carol started snickering, which set off Kyle, which triggered a chain reaction of barely suppressed laughter around the room. Even Silvia was covering her mouth with her hand, her eyes twinkling with mirth.

“Nice save there, Romeo,” Kyle called out, earning himself a glare that could have melted steel.

“My brain and my mouth filter stopped working,” I said defensively, which only made everyone laugh harder. “It’s been a long week, and I’m running on about three hours of sleep and too much coffee.”

“Uh-huh, XY said with obvious skepticism. “And I’m sure that’s the only reason you’re suddenly interested in Rivers’ relationship

status.”

“I wasn’t – it wasn’t that’s not what I meant!” I stammered, but even 1 could hear how unconvincing I sounded.

Rivers was watching this entire exchange with growing amusement, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth that made my

stomach do strange flips.

“You know what?” Carol said, standing up and grabbing a handful of papers from the table. “I think Thorne needs to cool off.”
