THORNE

Before I could react, she’d launched the documents at my head like projectiles. “Hey!” I protested, dodging a particularly well-aimed

folder. Was this what she meant by me cooling off?

That was all the invitation the others needed. Within seconds, the room had devolved into chaos as papers flew through the air and

grown adults chased each other around furniture like children.

Marcus was using a three-ring binder as a shield while Kyle pelted him with sticky notes. Samuel had taken cover behind his chair, laughing harder than I’d seen him laugh in years. I got worried about his heart, before he would die of a heart attack.

“This is completely unprofessional!” I yelled, even as I grabbed a stack of transport schedules to use as ammunition against Kashton, who was advancing on me with what looked like an entire ream of printer paper.

“So is hitting on people during business meetings!” Carol shot back, launching a particularly thick manual in my direction.

I was chasing XY around the conference table, determined to get revenge for his earlier comment, when the door opened and Zade walked in. He took one look at the scene – papers scattered everywhere, adults hiding behind furniture, me in the middle of it all with my hair disheveled and my shirt covered in ink from a pen that had exploded during the chaos and just stood there looking utterly

bewildered.

“What the hell is going on in here?” he asked, his voice cutting through the laughter and commotion.

Everyone froze in place like children caught misbehaving by a parent. Carol, still holding a folder above her head like she was about to throw it, cleared her throat and tried to look dignified.

“Thorne was hitting on Rivers,” she explained matter-of-factly, as if that somehow justified the complete destruction of our organized

workspace.

“I was not hitting on anyone!” I protested, but my voice cracked slightly on the words, undermining my credibility.

Zade’s eyebrows rose almost to his hairline as he processed this information. “You were hitting on my second-in-command?”

“No! Maybe. I don’t know!” I ran my hands through my hair in frustration, making it even messier than it already was. “I asked if he had a mate, and then everything went to hell from there.”

“Ah, Zade said, nodding like this explained everything. “And this led to… what exactly? A paper fight?”

“They were mocking me,” I said defensively. “It seemed like appropriate retaliation at the time.”

Zade looked around the destroyed room, then back at me, then at Rivers who was still standing in the doorway looking amused by the

entire situation.

“Well,” he said finally, “I hate to break this up, but I should probably mention that Rivers is happily married to his husband. They

have three kids together.”

My face fell so hard I practically felt it hit the floor. The embarrassment was crushing, made worse by the sympathetic looks everyone

was giving me. Of course he was married. Of course the first guy I’d been attracted to in months was completely unavailable.

“Oh,” I said quietly. “I’m sorry, Rivers. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable or anything.”

Rivers cleared his throat, shooting a look at Zade that I couldn’t quite interpret. “You can fuck right off with that bullshit,” he told his

Alpha calmly.

We all stared at him in shock. Rivers was usually so respectful, so professional. I’d never heard him speak to Zade with anything less

than perfect deference.

“He’s lying about the husband,” Rivers continued, turning to face me directly. “I’m single. No attachments.”

Hope fluttered back to life in my chest, tentative but persistent.

“You’re sure he’s lying? Not just… protecting your privacy or something?”

“Pretty sure I’d remember getting married and having kids,” Rivers said dryly, rolling his eyes in exasperation.

“Well, what about the other thing?” I asked, suddenly worried about a different kind of rejection. “I mean, you’re not… you don’t mind

that I’m…”

“That you’re interested in men?” Rivers finished when I couldn’t quite get the words out. “Hard to be homophobic when my Alpha is

gay, don’t you think?”

“Hey now,” Zade interrupted, “I’m not technically gay. I’m Lyn-sexual. There’s a difference.”

“Right,” Rivers said with obvious skepticism. “I’m sure that distinction matters to the pack traditionalists.”

Zade’s expression shifted from amusement to mock horror as he seemed to realize the implications of what was happening. “Oh hell

no,” he said, pointing at me accusingly.

“There is absolutely no way I’m letting you date my second-in-command.”

“Why not?” I asked, genuinely confused by his objection.

“Because that would make Xenois my in-law!” Zade exclaimed like this was the worst fate imaginable. “Do you have any idea how insufferable he’d be if our packs were connected by marriage? I’d never hear the end of it!”

The absurdity of his concern struck everyone at the same time, and the room erupted in laughter again. Here we were, planning the integration of supernatural species, dealing with traumatized children and political upheaval, and Zade was worried about family dinners

being awkward.

“I think you’re getting a little ahead of yourself,” Rivers said, but he was smiling as he said it.

“Maybe we should start with coffee before we start planning the wedding.”

The suggestion sent another wave of heat through my chest, this time accompanied by something that felt suspiciously like hope.

“Coffee sounds good,” I managed to say without my voice cracking.

“This is a disaster,” Zade muttered, but he was grinning as he said it. “My second-in-command and his second-in-command. The

political implications alone…”

“Will give us something to bond over during those awkward family dinners you’re so worried about,” I pointed out.

As the laughter died down and people began picking up the scattered papers, I caught Rivers’ eye across the room. He was still

smiling, and there was something warm and interested in his expression that made my pulse quicken all over again.

Maybe this whole situation wasn’t as much of a disaster as I’d thought.
