Chapter 292
“Try to think happy thoughts!”

Andy’s screams followed us up the narrow passage, echoing off the stone walls like the cries of the damned. The sound should have
disturbed me, should have triggered some instinct toward mercy or compassion. Instead, it felt like closure, like the final chapter of a
story that had gone on far too long.
We emerged into the fading daylight and walked in silence to where we’d parked the car. Only when we were safely inside with the doors locked and the engine running did anyone speak.
“I feel bad,” Lyn said suddenly, staring out the windshield at the darkening sky.
My heart clenched with worry. Was he having regrets? Second thoughts about what we’d just done?
“About Andy?” I asked carefully.
“No, not about her,” he clarified quickly. “I feel bad about whether I should wait before trying to seduce Zade tonight, or if I should
just go for it. I don’t want to scare him off with my enthusiasm.”
The complete non sequitur caught me off guard, and I burst into startled laughter. Lynn joined in a moment later, and soon all three
of us were giggling like teenagers sharing secrets.
“Oh my God, Lyn,” Lynn gasped between laughs. “Only you would be worried about your sex life immediately after committing
murder.”
“It’s not murder yet,” he protested.
“It’s just… extended torture with a fatal endpoint. Totally different.”
“Right,” I said sarcastically. “I’m sure the legal distinction will be very important to the courts.”
Lyn grinned at me through the rearview mirror. “You say that like any of us are planning to get caught. Besides, officially, Andy died
in a tragic cave-in. Very sad. Such a loss.”
As we drove back toward the hospital where our real lives waited, I found myself reflecting on how much I’d changed over these past
weeks. The woman who had fled Silver Creek in the middle of a storm would never have been capable of what we’d just done. That version
of myself had been too soft, too willing to accept abuse in the name of keeping peace.
But motherhood had forged me into something harder, more ruthless when it came to protecting the people I loved. Andy had made
the mistake of threatening my children, of stealing precious years from my family, and now she was paying the price for that error in
judgment.
I felt no guilt, no remorse, no second thoughts about leaving her to die in agony. Some acts were unforgivable, some people too

dangerous to be allowed to continue existing. Andy had proven beyond any doubt that she fell into that category.
Riley might never forgive me for the choices I’d made, but I could live with his hatred if it meant he was safe from further harm.
Sometimes love meant making the hard decisions, the ones that left blood on your hands and shadows in your heart.

As we pulled into the hospital parking lot, I caught sight of Xenois through the lobby windows, probably pacing and worrying about
where I’d gone. Soon I would have to return to the complicated dance of our marriage, to figuring out whether we could rebuild
something worthwhile from the wreckage of our past.
But for now, in this moment, I felt oddly at peace. Justice had been served, even if it came in a form that would never see the inside
of a courtroom. Andy would never hurt another child, never steal another family’s happiness, never poison another innocent mind with
her manipulations.
It was enough. It had to be enough. Because in the end, protecting my children was worth any price, even the price of my own soul.
