Chapter 291
LUMINA
Andy’s face went white beneath the grime and dried blood.

Lynn stepped up beside her brother, her expression as serene as if we were discussing the weather. “The ground beneath your cell is going to start heating up,” she explained helpfully. “Gradually at first, then more intensely. It will stop for one-minute intervals to let you recover slightly, then resume. The process will continue like that, over and over, until you’re dead.”
“The beauty of it,” Lyn added, raising his hands as magical energy began to coalesce around his fingers, “is that the spell is automatic once cast. We don’t have to be here to maintain it. It will continue working until your heart stops beating, which according to our research should take approximately two to three weeks.”
Andy’s composure finally cracked completely. “You can’t be serious! This is barbaric! You’re talking about torture, about murder!”
“You’re right,” I agreed readily. “It is barbaric. Almost as barbaric as spending years convincing a little boy that his mother abandoned
him. Almost as barbaric as forcing him to rewatch Sophia dying over and over. Almost as barbaric as conditioning him to believe that love has to be earned through perfect compliance.”
Lyn began chanting in the ancient language of his magical tradition, the words flowing together in a rhythm that seemed to resonate
in my bones. The air around us shimmered with power, and I could feel the temperature beginning to rise even from outside the cell.
“Stop!” Andy screamed, throwing herself against the bars with desperate strength. “Please! I’ll do anything you want! I’ll tell you
whatever you need to know!”
“We already know everything,” Lynn said cheerfully, waving at Andy like she was a friend we were leaving after a pleasant visit. “This
isn’t about information. This is about justice.”
The spell reached its crescendo, and I could see the first wisps of heat beginning to rise from the stone floor of Andy’s cell. She
scrambled back against the far wall, but there was nowhere to go, nowhere to hide from what was coming.
“Riley will never forgive you for this!” she shrieked, playing her last desperate card. “When he finds out what you’ve done, he’ll hate
you forever!”
The words were meant to wound me, to plant seeds of doubt about my son’s love and acceptance. But they fell flat, powerless against
the certainty that had carried me through these past weeks.
*He already hates me,” I said simply.
“That’s what you made sure of, isn’t it? You spent five years poisoning him against the very idea of his birth family. My relationship with Riley was already destroyed the moment you decided to steal him from his crib. This won’t make it any worse.”
Andy’s expression shifted from desperate anger to something approaching panic as the heat continued to build around her feet.

Chapter 291
“The boy! Lake! He’s still unconscious! You’re doing this for nothing!”

I felt Lynn and Lyn both tense beside me, waiting to see how this final manipulation would land. Andy was right that Lake remained
comatose, right that his condition had been the catalyst for so much of Riley’s current cooperation. But she was wrong about my
motivations.
“Actually,” I said, allowing myself a small, cold smile, “Lake is never waking up. The doctors say his brain activity is getting lower
every day. Soon he’ll be declared brain dead, and then we’ll have to make the decision about whether to keep his body alive on machines.”
It was a lie, of course. Lake’s condition was stable, and there were still hopes for his recovery. But Andy didn’t need to know that, and
the look of defeated rage that crossed her face made the deception worthwhile.
“We’ll leave you to get comfortable,” Lynn added brightly, linking her arm through mine as we turned to leave.
