Chapter 298
OLLIE
For the first time since Andy’s revelations had destroyed our family, I saw real emotion on my brother’s face. Hope, excitement,
desperate need all the feelings the medication had been suppressing came flooding back as he processed what this meant.

Dad was already making a U-turn, his movements sharp and efficient as he navigated back toward the hospital. “They want us there,”
he said. “If Lake is regaining consciousness, having familiar faces nearby could help orient him.”
The drive back felt eternal despite Dad pushing the speed limit. I watched Riley press his face against the window, his entire body
tense with anticipation and anxiety. This was the most engaged I’d seen him in weeks, and it was all because of Lake.
I tried not to feel jealous of his unconscious friend, tried not to resent the fact that Lake could still reach my brother in ways that
none of us could. But it stung to see Riley so animated about someone else’s welfare when he could barely acknowledge my existence.
We rushed through the hospital lobby, past the reception desk where the night staff looked up with recognition and concern. The
elevator ride to Lake’s floor lasted forever, each floor number lighting up with agonizing slowness as we climbed toward what felt like the
most important moment of Riley’s life.”
The corridor outside Lake’s room was buzzing with activity. Nurses moved with purposeful urgency, wheeling equipment and checking
monitors while Dr. Sloane coordinated the response with calm efficiency.
Through the observation window, I could see Lake’s bed surrounded by medical personnel, machines beeping with increased
frequency.
“What’s happening?” Riley asked Dr. Sloane as she emerged from the room, his voice cracking with urgency and hope.
“His brain activity has increased dramatically over the past hour,” she explained, glancing between Riley and our parents. “We’re
seeing coordinated neural responses, muscle contractions, even what appears to be attempts at vocalization. All signs point to emerging
consciousness.”
Riley tried to push past her toward Lake’s room, but she caught his arm gently.
“We need to give the medical team space to work right now. But if his progress continues, you should be able to see him very soon.”
I watched my brother pace the hallway while Mom and Dad sat in the uncomfortable chairs, all of us united in the universal anxiety
of hoping for good news.
Other families had gathered in the waiting area, drawn by the unusual level of activity, but I only had eyes for Riley.
This was the most alive he’d looked in weeks. The medication couldn’t suppress his connection to Lake, couldn’t numb his desperate need for his friend to be okay. It gave me hope that maybe, underneath all the barriers that he erected and emotional shutdown, my real
brother was still in there somewhere.

Then the commotion started.
Shouts erupted from somewhere down the corridor, followed by the sound of running feet and urgent voices calling for security. I
could see nurses and doctors moving quickly past the windows, their faces tight with concern as they responded to whatever crisis had
developed.
“What’s happening?” Mom asked, standing up as the noise level increased.

Riley was already moving toward the sound, his face tight with panic. I followed close behind him, not wanting to lose sight of him in the chaos. Behind us, I could hear our parents calling our names as we pushed through the crowd of medical personnel who were trying
to manage whatever situation had developed.
Riley reached Lake’s room first and pressed his face against the observation window. I squeezed in beside him, desperate to see what
had caused his sudden stillness.
The bed was empty.
–
Not just empty the sheets were pushed back, medical equipment was scattered, and there were clear signs of someone having gotten up and moved around. Lake’s room was vacant, but not because something terrible had happened to him.
