Chapter 299
“Where is he?” Riley asked the nearest nurse, his voice cracking with urgency. “Where’s Lake?”
“He woke up about five minutes ago,” she explained, trying to maintain professional calm despite the obvious chaos.

“Fully conscious, alert, asking questions about Riley. But when we tried to run some tests, he became agitated and insisted on getting
out of bed. He opened a portal and slipped through. Security is trying to locate him now.”
I watched relief and concern war across Riley’s face as he processed this information. Lake was awake, aware, alive. But he was also
missing, wandering the hospital corridors in a weakened state after days of unconsciousness.
“Riley!” Mom’s voice carried sharp authority as she and Dad caught up with us. “You can’t just run off like that. We need to stay
together and let the medical staff handle this.”
“But Lake is awake,” Riley said, the words tumbling out in a rush of excitement and anxiety. “He’s conscious and moving around and
we need to find him. What if he’s scared? What if he doesn’t understand where he is?”
I could see the search continuing around us – security guards coordinating with hospital staff, checking rooms and corridors for any
sign of a confused kid in a hospital gown.
The efficiency should have been reassuring, but I could tell Riley was thinking about Lake wandering around lost and frightened.
“The staff will find him,” Dad said, placing a hand on Riley’s shoulder.
“He can’t have gone far, and the hospital is secure. He’s probably just disoriented from waking up.”
That’s when I heard it – the soft sound of a door opening behind us.
I turned around, and my heart stopped completely.
Lake stood in the doorway of his own room, one hand pressed against the wall for support while the other reached out toward Riley.
He was pale and obviously weak, his hospital gown hanging loose on his diminished frame, but his eyes were clear and focused and
completely aware.
He was smiling at my brother.
Not the vacant, medicated smile of someone heavily sedated, not the confused expression of someone emerging from
unconsciousness, but the real, genuine smile of someone recognizing the person they loved most in the world.
“Riley,” he said, his voice hoarse from days of intubation but unmistakably his own.
I watched my brother transform. One moment he was standing frozen beside me, staring at Lake in disbelief, and the next he was

across the space between them, catching Lake as his legs gave out and he collapsed forward.

The impact sent them both to their knees on the hospital floor, but neither of them seemed to care. Lake was alive, awake, holding onto Riley with shaking hands while tears streamed down both their faces.
For the first time in weeks, I saw my brother’s medication-dulled emotions crack completely open. Relief, joy, gratitude, love – all the feelings he’d been too afraid to access came pouring out in a rush that left him sobbing against Lake’s shoulder.
“I thought you were going to die,” Riley whispered, his words muffled by emotion and overwhelming relief.
“I thought I was going to lose you too.”
Lake’s arms tightened around him, his grip surprisingly strong for someone who’d been unconscious for days.
“I heard you,” he said, his voice rough but determined. “When I was… wherever I was. I could hear you talking to me. You told me you were scared and you needed me to come back, so I did. It helped me find my way back.”

I stood there watching my twin brother fall apart and put himself back together in Lake’s arms, and for the first time since this whole nightmare began, I felt something approaching hope. Not for myself, not for our relationship as brothers, but for Riley’s ability to feel
something real again.
