Chapter 30

LUMINA

Mrs. Henderson’s hands were shaking slightly as she gestured toward the hallway where my son was waiting for me.

The white lights above illuminated her weathered face, making her look older than her fifty something.

“Mrs. Blackwood, I need to tell you exactly what happened today,” she said, her voice sounding lower than before. And more urgent. “Because what I saw today… it wasn’t a normal playground accident.”

My stomach dropped hearing this. “What do you mean?”

“Ollie was playing with the other children during recess when the accident happened. He was laughing, running around, being his usual happy self, there was no sign of discomfort or rough playing anywhere and all the kids were playing with him. Then suddenly, he just… stopped.” She paused, her brow furrowing as she seemed to be struggling to find the right words.

“He went completely still, his eyes fixed on something that none of us could see. His face went white, and he started shaking.

I felt my blood run cold. This sounded similar to one of the symptoms that happened in the past life. Ollie seeing things that wasn’t there and certain that there was a monster watching him. Xenois had brushed it aside saying all kids often went through that phase of

monsters under the bed.

“We tried to get his attention, but it was like he couldn’t hear us. Then he started screaming, holding his hand like something was burning him. But there was nothing there, Mrs. Blackwood. Nothing that could have hurt him.”

“What do you mean nothing?” I asked, though I was scared that I might know the answer.

“There was no hot surface, no fire, no chemicals that could have caused such a reaction like that. He was standing in the middle of the playground, at least ten feet away from any equipment. But somehow, his palm was severely burned, like he’d pressed it against a hot

stove or iron.”

Her words felt like I was being punched and all the breath was gone from my lungs. This was one of the signs that this was a supernatural thing but how? It hadn’t started till later on, months after Sophia got back in Xenois life.

“Thank you for telling me,” I managed to say, my voice low enough that I could barely hear myself either.

“I need to see him now.”

Mrs. Henderson nodded, but I could see the concern in her eyes. She was probably wondering if there was something wrong at home, if I was somehow responsible for whatever was happening to my son.

I walked down the hallway on unsteady legs, my mind racing with different possibilities. If this was starting again, if someone was using magic to hurt Ollie, then I had to figure out how Sophia was doing it. And I had to do it fast, before it was too late to save him.

The door to room 314 was slightly open and I pushed it open quietly and saw my son lying in the hospital bed, looking so small and fragile against the white sheets.

His left hand was wrapped in bandages, and there were dark circles under his eyes.

“Mama?” he said softly when he saw me, and the relief in his voice made my heart break.

“I’m here, baby,” I said, rushing to his side and carefully taking his uninjured hand in mine as I looked at him all over searching for

anything else that the doctors might have missed. “How are you feeling?”

“It hurt so bad, Mama. I don’t know why. My hand felt like it was on fire, but I didn’t touch anything. I promise I didn’t touch

anything.”

The desperation in his voice, the urgent need to convince me he hadn’t done anything wrong, made me want to cry.

“I know you didn’t, sweetheart. This isn’t your fault.”

A doctor showed up in the doorway, a middle-aged man with kind eyes and black hair. “Mrs. Blackwood? I’m Dr. Scott. I’ve been taking

care of Ollie.”

I stood up, not letting go of my son’s hand as I turned to face him.

“What happened to him? Mrs. Henderson said there was nothing that could have caused the burn.”

Dr. Scott looked puzzled as he nodded his head slowly.

“That’s what’s so strange about this case. The burn pattern on his palm is undeniably similar to that with a hot surface. But according

to the school, there was no such surface anywhere near where he was playing.”

“So how do you explain it?”

“I can’t,” he admitted, shaking his head as he looked at me.

“In twenty years of practice, I’ve never seen anything like this. The injury is real, the pain was real, but the cause…” He shrugged

helplessly.

“We’ve treated the burn, and it should heal normally in time. But I’m recommending that you follow up with his pediatrician, maybe consider some tests to rule out any allergic symptoms, probably food allergies or something.”

I nodded, though I knew no medical test would explain what was really happening to my son.

“Can I take him home?”

“The burn is second-degree, but not severe. With proper care, he should be fine. I’ll discharge him so you can take him home. I

believe he will rest better in a familiar place.”

Twenty minutes later, I was helping Ollie into the car, his injured hand carefully held against his chest. He was quiet during the drive home, not saying anything and just staring out the window with that distant look that reminded a little of how he looked in his past life.

“Mama,” he said suddenly, getting my attention immediately as we pulled into our driveway. He paused for a moment looking at me,

before he said in a low voice.

“I saw something today. Before my hand started hurting.”

I turned off the engine and faced him properly. “What did you see?”

“A boy. He looked scared, and he was crying. His hand was burning too, and there was a mean lady hurting him.”
