Chapter 31

was.
My blood turned to ice, hearing this from his mouth. “What did this boy look like?” I asked, alarmed, trying to figure out who this
“He had dark hair like mine, but his was curlier. And he was smaller than me. He looked like he wanted to run away, but he couldn’t.”
Riley. He was describing Riley, the little boy from the restaurant. Riley that bears an uncanny resemblance to Ollie. But how could
Ollie have seen him? They were miles apart, and in completely different places.
Unless… unless whatever was happening to Ollie was connected somehow to Riley. But what would hurt Riley? Riley was never hurt in
the past life. He had a doting mum and the attention of my husband. And he was never lacking for anything
‘Did you recognize the boy? Have you seen him before?”
Ollie shook his head, slowly as he replied. “No, I haven’t seen him before but I felt sad for him. He was really scared, Mama. Someone
was hurting him.”
I helped him out of the car and into the house, my mind racing with different possibilities about how this was possible.
If Ollie was somehow connected to Riley, if they were both experiencing the same pain at the same time, then this wasn’t random.
Someone was doing this deliberately, using magic to link them together. But who? Would Sophia do this to Riley to prove a point to
me? I don’t think so. She may hate me but harming her own child would be too evil even for her.
But why? What could anyone gain from hurting two innocent children?
We were barely through the front door when I saw him. Xenois was sitting on our couch, his face filled with anger and suspicion.
He stood up when he saw us, his eyes immediately going to Ollie’s bandaged hand.
“Go to your room, Ollie,’ I said quickly, sensing the tension in the air and wanting to get Ollie away from it. Especially with how
things ended at the restaurant, Xenois might still be pissed off about how I treated Sophia and might be back to fight for her. I couldn’t let my son see that.
‘Get into your pajamas and I’ll bring you dinner in a bit.”
‘But Mama-‘
“Now, please.’

Ollie looked between us, sensing something was wrong, but he didn’t say anything else and he obediently headed for the stairs.
I waited until I heard his bedroom door close before turning to face my husband.
“What are you doing here?”
Xenois’s expression was colder than I’d ever seen as he glared at me, his hands clenched into fists as he said.
“I could ask you the same thing. You know, considering you were supposed to be apologizing to Sophia and not attacking innocent
women in restaurants.”
“That woman is not innocent-”
“And then I get a call from the hospital saying my son has been injured,” he continued, his voice rising as he stepped closer towards me, his anger leaking out, turning the whole room bitter.
“Mysteriously injured, with burns that the doctors can’t explain. An hour after you left the restaurant. Just like how Riley was mysteriously terrified in the restaurant today.”
I stared at him, trying to process what he was implying as I couldn’t believe my ears. “You think I hurt Ollie?”
“I think you have a problem controlling your temper, and now you are taking it out on innocent children.”
The accusation hit me hard across the face like a slap. “Are you insane? He’s my son! Why would I hurt my own child?”
“The same reason you attacked Sophia today. The same reason you made Riley so scared he couldn’t speak. Because you’re losing
control, Lumina.”
Before I could respond, he was moving toward me, his alpha authority rolling off him in waves,
I found myself backing up until I hit the wall, trapped between his body and the hard surface behind me.
“What really happened today?” he demanded, his hands braced on either side of my head. “What did you do to my son?”
“Nothing!” I said, trying to push him away from me as I felt fear pursuing through my veins. He had never liked me but at least he never got too mad at me either and now I was uncertain of how he would react to this.
“I was at the hospital, taking care of him! While you were off playing white knight to that manipulative-”
“Stop.” His voice was deadly quiet and calm as I could see the muscle moving in his cheeks. “Just stop lying to me.”
“I’m not lying!”
“Then explain to me how Ollie got burned when there was nothing to burn him with. Explain to me why he keeps having these

episodes that only you seem to be around. Explain to me why every child around you seems to end up scared or hurt.”

I looked into his eyes and saw something that made my heart break into multiple pieces. He genuinely believed I was capable of
hurting our son. After everything we’d been through, he thought I was a monster.
“I can’t,” I whispered shaking my head wiping down the tears that had escaped from my face. “I can’t explain it because you won’t
believe me even if I told you the truth.”
“Try me.”
“What if I told you, that something bad is happening to our son. That someone is trying to use dark magic to kill him.”
Xenois looked at me like I was stupid, his hand caressing the necklace that I had seen him wearing since Sophia came. He looked confused for a moment before his eyes hardened as he shook his head.
“The truth is that you’re having some kind of breakdown, and it’s affecting our son. I can’t let that continue.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means I’m going to be staying here for a while instead of staying in the office and keeping late hours. I’ll be here to keep an eye
on Ollie, to make sure he’s safe.”
“Safe from me, you mean.”
He didn’t deny it, and that silence was answer enough, to how low his trust in me was.
‘Daddy?”
We both turned to see Ollie standing at the top of the stairs in his pajamas, looking small and confused. He clearly heard us arguing even though we tried to keep our voices down,
“Hey, buddy,” Xenois said, his voice immediately getting softer as he let go of the necklace and walked over to the stairs and held out
his arms.
“Come here,”
Ollie practically ran down the stairs and into his father’s embrace. I watched as Xenois lifted him up, held him close, whispered something in his ear that made him nod.
“I’m going to stay here tonight,” Xenois said, carrying Ollie toward the kitchen. “Maybe we can order some pizza, watch a movie. How
does that sound?”
“Really?” Ollie’s face lit up. “You’re going to sleep here?”

“Just for tonight. Maybe longer.” He said as Ollie smiled burrowing his face in his neck seeking comfort from him as Xenois looked at
me and shook his head disappointed.
