Chapter 310
LYN

The study felt smaller than usual with all of us packed inside, the tension so thick I could practically taste it on my tongue. I’d positioned myself near the window, as far from the door as I could manage without making my discomfort obvious.
The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the expensive Persian rug, and I found myself counting the patterns in the weaving
rather than meeting anyone’s eyes.
Zade stood by the fireplace, his arms crossed and his expression thunderous. He hadn’t wanted Lake in his house at all, had made that abundantly clear when Xenois and Lumina had first brought the unconscious boy through his doors.
The only reason he’d agreed was because Riley had looked at him with those empty, medicated eyes and said quietly that if Lake
wasn’t welcome, neither was he.
“This is a mistake,” Zade said, not for the first time. “That boy tortured you, Lyn. Tortured you while you were helpless, while he had you strapped to a table like some kind of laboratory experiment. And now we’re supposed to what? Welcome him with open arms because
he’s important to Riley?”
“No one’s asking you to welcome him,” Thorne said from his position near the desk, his tone diplomatic but firm.
“We’re asking you to tolerate his presence for a few more days until Xenois and Lumina can get both boys settled in Silver Creek.”
“A few more days,” Zade repeated, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “A few more days of having my mate’s torturer under my roof. How
generous of me.”
I appreciated his anger on my behalf, truly I did. But it also made this whole situation more complicated than it needed to be.
“Zade,” I said quietly, finally looking up from the rug. “I can handle this.”
His expression softened slightly when he looked at me, concern replacing some of the rage. “You shouldn’t have to handle this. You shouldn’t have to be in the same building as him, let alone the same room.”
“And yet here we are,” I said, trying for levity and failing. “Life’s full of uncomfortable situations. This is just another one.”
Lynn, who’d been silent until now, shifted in her seat near the desk.
“The question isn’t whether Lyn can handle it,” she said, her voice carrying that analytical quality that meant she was working
through a problem.
“The question is whether we can afford not to address this now. Lake is a factor in Riley’s life, and Riley is a factor in all our lives whether we like it or not. Avoiding this conversation just delays the inevitable.”

“Lynn’s right,” Rivers added, leaning against the wall near the door. As Zade’s second-in-command, his opinion carried weight, and I
saw my mate pause to consider his words.
“The longer we let this fester, the worse it’s going to get. These kids are already traumatized enough without adding unresolved
tension to the mix.”
Xenois and Lumina had been quiet throughout this exchange, both of them looking exhausted in a way that went beyond simple
physical tiredness.
They’d been dealing with Riley’s transformation for weeks now, watching their son become someone they barely recognized, and now
they had Lake to worry about too.
“There’s something else,” Lumina said, her voice cutting through the debate. “Something we need to tell you about Riley.”
The shift in her tone made everyone go still. I watched as she exchanged a look with Xenois, some silent communication passing
between them that spoke of long years as mates and partners.
“In the car today,” Xenois began, his hands clasped tightly together, “Riley demonstrated an ability we weren’t aware he had. Enhanced hearing, but not like normal werewolf hearing. He was able to hear a conversation happening inside a car three lanes over in traffic, through closed windows and over engine noise. He repeated back the entire conversation word-for-word, details he couldn’t
possibly have known otherwise.”
“Werewolf hearing doesn’t work like that,” Thorne said, straightening from his casual lean.
