Chapter 32

SOPHIA

The silence in the apartment was loud after Riley had been locked in his room for the past three hours.

I sat on the couch, staring at my phone, my mind running amok with possibilities and frustrations as I was both satisfied and upset

with today’s event.

Xenois had seen Lumina’s true nature like I wanted him to see, but he’d also rejected my advances towards him which made things

worse.

I needed to hasten up my plans and fast.

I opened my contact list and scrolled through it until I found the number I was looking for.

Andy had been very clear that I should only call in emergencies, but this qualified as an emergency as well.

If I was going to win Xenois over completely and ruin his mate’s life in the process, I needed every advantage I could get.

The phone rang three times before a high pitched voice answered.

“Sophia. I told you not to call unless it was urgent.”

“It is urgent,” I said, as I walked towards the window that overlooked the street.

“The plan isn’t working fast enough. I need to speed things up.”

There was a long pause on the other end of the line, like she was contemplating what I had said before she replied.

“The magic I gave you isn’t something to be rushed. The charm that’s on Xenois needs time to work, to slowly redirect his feelings from his mate to you. If you push too hard too fast, it could backfire and everything would go to waste..”

“But he’s still choosing her,” I protested, clenching my fist in anger as I hated what I was hearing.

“Even after seeing what she did today, even after she humiliated me in public, he’s still going home to her.”

“You need to have more patience, child. The seeds of doubt have been planted in his mind and soon enough it will grow. His alpha instincts are already starting to question his mate’s stability and lose trust in her. Give it time.”

I closed my eyes, fighting the urge to scream or break something out of sheer frustration. Time was something I didn’t have in

abundance.

Every day that passed was another day that Lumina could strengthen her position in his life, another day that Tennis could come to his senses and see that I have been manipulating him all this while,

“What about the other thing? I asked, shaking my head as I shifted the conversation to something dhe equally important

“The energy transfer between the boys. Is that ready?”

“Ah, yes. The siphon spell. Her voice took on a darker and more interested tone as the replied.

“That is progressing nicely. The connection between the children has been established. Every time your boy experiences pain or fear. it creates a stronger link to the Blackwood child.

My stomach clenched as I thought about Riley’s burned hand, that happened after I had taken out my anger on him. And Cillie will start getting weaker?

“Gradually, yes. The boy’s life force will slowly transfer to Riley, making him stronger while Ollie becomes less resistant to illness and injury. Eventually, when all the life force has been transferred to Riley, the Blackbrood boy will simply fade away.”

How long will it take?”

“That depends on how often the boys talk to each other, be in each other’s presence. Physical contact would hasten the process significantly, but just being in the same room alone will suffice. The more time they spend together, the faster the transfer.”

I felt a chill run down my spine. This was really happening, I was actively participating in something that would kill a child, an innocent little boy who had never done anything to hurt me.

But then I thought about Riley, about the life he could have if he were Xenois’s ONLY heir instead of just another unwanted child that I took to achieve my goals.

I thought about the security, the wealth, the opportunities that would open up for me and the fact that my life could change us the real mate of Xenois and no longer his dirty little secret.

“They need to meet,’ I said, pushing away my doubts about this crashing before it could even happen as I focused on the good things that I was to gain when this came to pass.

The boys need to spend time together.”

‘Exactly. And that, my dear, is your task. You must find a way to bring them together, to make their interactions seem natural and innocent. The magic will do the rest.”

I’m working on it,” I said, though I wasn’t sure how I was going to make that happen

Lumina clearly didn’t trust me,

and after today’s confrontation, she probably never would.

Chapter 32

“Good. And Sophia? Be careful. Magic this dark tends to have… side effects. Especially for those who aren’t prepared for it.”

“What kind of side effects?”

“The kind that makes you question who you really are. The kind that makes you wonder if what you’re doing is worth the price you’re

paying.”

The line went dead, leaving me standing alone in the dark apartment. I stared at the phone for a long moment, her warnings echoing

in my mind.

But it was too late for second thoughts now. I’d already come too far to turn back.

I walked down the hallway to Riley’s room and pressed my ear to the door. I could hear the sound of him breathing and the occasional movement of his bed sheets as he tossed around.

I was certain the burn was still hurting him and granted as I had not given him any pain meds or ointment for him to think about what he had done. I knew that sleep would be fitful for him tonight.

But by tomorrow, the accelerated healing would kick in, perks of being an Alpha heir, and there would be no scars to prove to the

world that he was hurt.

I pushed opened the door and stepped inside as Riley pretended to be asleep.

“I know you’re awake,” I said softly.

He didn’t respond, but his breathing changed slightly. He was listening.

“What happened today can’t happen again,” I continued. “When we’re in public, you need to behave normally. You need to smile, talk to people, show them that you’re a happy, healthy child. Can you do that for me?”

Still no response, but I could see his small hands clenching into fists.

“I’m trying to build a better life, Riley. A real family with someone who can take care of us both. But I can’t do that if you keep acting like there’s something wrong with you.”

I waited a moment longer, then closed the door and locked it again. He’d learn. He had to learn. Because if he didn’t, if he couldn’t play his part In this carefully orchestrated plan, then everything I’d sacrificed would be for nothing.
